If you were a police officer...?

and your very kind hearted would that make your job easier or difficult?

Coach
I was a police officer and I am also a kind hearted person. The 2 dont mix very well. You have to make a fine line between nice and nice but forceful. People do respond to being nice to, better than ordering people around. But this way, is at times, what needs to be done to get someones attention. There are police officers (worked with many) that are nice guys but dealing with the public they have a "chip" on their shoulder. This is where the public gets the wrong idea.

It can make the job harder, but to do the job well, while not ruining your private life; it needs to be part of the job. I am a police officer in one of the biggest cities in America and I see “tough cops”, but to be hard hearted will have very few positive results…except for making the officer’s job a little easier. I am very “tender hearted” and I know I get lied to and give the benefit of the doubt to people who don’t deserve it, but that’s o.k. I have been doing it this way for a long time I would still rather show concern and compassion for one out of ten than to treat everyone with a kill-‘em-all-and-let-God-sort-‘em-out attitude. I draw a very clear line in regards officer safety, law, and policy (in that order) short of that, God gave us a brain and heart to guide our discretion, which is the most useful tool an officer has. In my opinion, to treat everyone rough is just “phoning it in”. That not why I chose this profession and still believe it is the best job there is.

I have been re-paid more by people have remembered my kindness than any who acted on what they perceived as weakness or gullibility.

There are not as many “hardened criminals” as you might think. Most of the people in our prisons are average people who have made very bad decisions. But at the same time, I don’t ever let my guard down because I know they are out there.

Been one (Deputy Sheriff). A kind heart would make the job harder. You can't be kind when you deal with bad people.

Well, for the most part cops are very kindhearted and caring, or else they wouldn't have signed up for a job that puts them at risk just because of the uniform that they wear. They just for the most part don't have sympathy for those that break the law and try to harm others, nor should they.

me just like you but better

I think that it would makes things more difficult. As if, someone very young is catch for shop lifting. You would have to do something but it would be difficult.

I believe it depends solely on the situation. I had calls where I've seen so called "good cops" sit and try and reason with a guy like he was some sort of mental health councillor for over an hour as to why the guy should leave private property when the store owner did'nt want him there, the more the Officer was nice about it, the more the guy argued with him. Finally after realizing the Officer was still at the scene and was still dealing with him,( Believe it or not, we DO have other calls to go to) I showed up and point blank told the guy move it or turn around and get cuffs put on him and he'd go to jail right then and there.. he moved along. I've also seen when Officers try to use force right off when they could have taken a few minutes to reason with the guy, sure the guy ends up getting the cuffs put on and getting thrown in the hoosegow, but the Officer could have just as well used some reason and verbal Judo and ended the situation by the person just moving along, being ticketed or just cited to court. Just today, some bleeding heart said I should have been nicer to a guy who wrote on YA that he had found a police badge and played cop, got reported and now he has to face the music. Is being nice to the Kid really what the kid needs or a good old fashioned dress down? I bet his parents were bleeding hearts too since he didn't even know it was Illegal to impersonate an Officer. Lets face it, different people should be treated differently, its up to an officer to make a judgment call on which way will work the best, sometimes he makes the right call, sometimes he doesn't, after all Police Officers are only human too.

IMO, women make better police officers. Men are usually too aggressive, and too confrontational. Not to say I've never seen a male police officer handle tense situations well, but the women will usually find a non-violent solution.

I believe it also depends on the situation. If you're escorting dangerous criminals then you're going to have to be more aggressive. However, a police officers duty is usually dealing with the public that are not violent lifelong criminals.

An aggressive police officer is a liability to the department and a hazard to the people he has sworn to protect, and I believe there is more than enough proof out there showing cops beating and arresting decent people.

Anyone can see that when anyone is pushed too far that things go South. A cop with a kind heart doesn't necessarily make him/her a pushover or a fool. They just tend to treat people with respect and kindness and in turn they are treated the same. This is not always the case, though, as some people will always be assinine. These types of cops should be partnered with the snapperhead sort which would keep the snapperhead in check and prove to the good cop that his way is proper and respectful. Threatening to arrest someone for looking at you in the course of your duties is an absolutely assinine action. It seems the only way to make sure cops act properly is to have a camera on hand. Have you seen how many cops have been caught in the act of a vicious beating? How about the ones in OKC who handcuffed a homeless woman, then tazered her 3 times in the temple and 2 times in the neck. They killed her claiming that she was resisting. Ever see cops, the tv show, when 4-5 cops put someone on the ground and cuff them, until someone steps on his head or knees him in the back and they start yelling stop resisting. Gotta have drama to be a tv star huh girls? Seen one guy cuffed who was OD'd on heroin, basically dead, they say he was resisting. Correct me if I'm wrong but can a dead man really resist anything? There are times when force must be used, but, stop laying on the BS for the cameras. At one point, many years ago, our town had 2 cops. Both of these guys were very kind and respectful, even if they were arresting you. They were the best cops I've ever met. Too bad their wisdom and ways weren't handed down through your training program, so that you would see how effective this can be. Any cop that thinks he must always be a bully should be taken out of the game. Since the schools are ridding themselves of bullies so should the police. I seem to remember a time when the cops talked trash about the gangs bc they'd always fight 5 on 1 now it is a tactic that you use. Who's the Pu$#y now? Think twice speak once.
