Misconduct is probably more widespread and overlooked than brutality. It's harder to hide brutality than misconduct. I believe that corruption exist but in general I believe that the majority of officers mean well. However, the police can hide their "activities" and are prone to misconduct. Afterall, you can't call the police on the police and expect anything to happen. |

Corruption, brutality and misconduct are extremely rare among police and are not tolerated. There are rare exceptions. For example, in Harvey Illinois a few years back (a notorious drug neighborhood), the local gang infiltrated the police and, over time, replaced all the local cops with gang members, simply by hiring them. They spent all their time running drugs until the FBI infiltrated them and arrested the whole department. This sort of thing only happens in the worst, most drug infested minority neibhborhoods.
Near 100% of complaints by criminals, about the cops are proven to be nothing but a pack of lies. Minorities tend to distrust cops for two reasons....they are criminals and they are racist. It is a sad fact that a black or hispanic will have a deep hatred and distrust for others of a different race, even if they are an authority figure who is there to protect them. They will side with the criminal even though the criminal is likely to harm or even kill them. |

No I do not trust most police, they have a power trip and are dealing with to many crazy people. I live in a small town where the police, the district attorney, the public offender, and the judge are all dirty, you really have to watch your butt. But on the other hand if your not doing anything wrong you dont have to worry about them. |

Opinion? I can give you facts. I was a Sheriff for 9 years.
Is there all you mentioned? yes. Does it go untold? Yes.
Is it widespread? hmmmm, it's only where Police are. There are so many great Law Enforcement Officers out there.
Now, Is there a "perfect" cop, with no faults? no. You show me a "perfect" anyone in a select job category.
You know what I have found over the years is, there are people who want change. people who welcome change..People who talk about change..and the people that actually make the change.
If you have a person problem with Law Enforcement, I suggest you get on a local dept, and show them all how it's really to be done. you mite make a Nobel Winner. |

Firstly, I am going to assume that you mean the law enforcement community of the United States - if this is the case then yes I most certainly do trust the police. I agree that there are good cops and bad cops but then, there are good and bad in every occupation: teachers, bank managers, contractors, etc.
Other countries with organized law enforcement are not so lucky... for example, in some countries, laws are based upon religion whereby everyday occurrences such as blasphemy, heresy and adultery, which are often overlooked in more democratic societies, are treated as mortal crimes that are punishable by death. The fact that some of the people who are often employed as police officers in these countries have such control over the general population due to the fact that a simple accusation is often all the evidence that is needed to effect a conviction, this leaves the whole system open to corruption - remember: Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
As for bad experiences at the hands of law enforcement: In May 2001, I was mugged by (an attempted mugging - I fought back and won) four shoes-shine boys in Taksim - a metropolitan area of Istanbul, Turkey. The whole incident was watched by two heavily armed gendarmes who totally ignored the fact that a tourist was being attacked by four Turkish Nationals - I was later told by a local that the reason they did not intervene is that I did not look affluent enough therefore they did not believe that I would be able to "tip" them well enough. As it turns out, although I won the battle - I sustained 4 broken ribs and a rather tasty black eye to boot. |

As in any occupation there are good officers and bad officers. I also see corruption in every work environment. The police force is representative of the people who come to it. IF you have people of low moral fiber going into the police then you will have officers of low moral fiber. However if you have people of high morals and ethics then you will have officers with high morals and ethics. This will limit the corruption, brutality and misconduct that you are refering to. One thing you may want to note. The majority of officers are not corrupt or brutal or prone to misconduct. The media however finds them too boring for reporting and only reports the bad cops. that is what gives a public impression of crooked cops. |

Here is the concept. Law. Did you get it? If I run a stop sign and a cop catches me I may get upset. Why? I got caught. I am the bad guy. I might not think so. The next person might think being publicly naked eating babies setting people on fire while driving drunk is okay too. It makes no difference. If you break the law you break the law. Law enforcement officers do not make the law, they try to enforce it. Law. It is a concept. If you do not break the law then you do not ever have to worry about being caught. If you get caught do not get mad at the officer. They are humans like you that are trying to make a paycheck. I could not be a law enforcement officer because I do not have the courage and bravery to approach a vehicle taking a chance some wacko might shoot me because he was mad that I stopped him for a traffic violation. YES I TRUST COPS. |

2 tell u the truth , I trust the police about as far as I can throw them , and the bad thing about that is that I am 39 and a semi-retired security specialist officer. I trust security more than I do the police. At least security doesn't have an attitude from hell and go around beating the snot out of people. And did you know that there are more security officer protecting this country than police? So next time that you see a S.O., say thanks and make their day!! |

The corruption and brutality is too widespread and overlooked?
Can you name one specific instance about corruption or "brutality"? Or are the police just your scapegoat for breaking the law. I hear a lot about the "corruption" and "brutality" but nothing to support either of those claims.
If anything, the police use too little force.
For instance, the annual rate of deadly force by police is 364 as compared to 60,307 assaults on police officers (10,994 of which involved a deadly weapon).
The bottom line is if you fight the police (whether you beleive you are right or not) they are going to fight back.
While Im sure there is a certain amount of corruption the VAST majority of officers are honest to the bone because in this day and age everything is recorded. |

I think there are good police officers, as well as not so good ones. My ex is an officer, and my grandfather was as well. Both good at their jobs. So, yes I trust the police. I think the rumor of misconduct and corruption is too widespread... |
