In what states in the USA you do not need a gun permit to buy a gun?

Practically none of them. The only state that has a form of registration is Illinois. To own a firearm there, you are required to have a FOID(Firearms Owner ID) card. The rest of the states however, have no requirement to have any type of permit before purchasing a firearm. A few states, like CA have longer waiting periods for handgun purchases and waiting periods following the purchase of a long gun. But most states follow the Federal law of a three day waiting period after the purchase of a handgun and no waiting period for long guns.

nas88caror, for being a "T/C" in law and Ethics you need to brush up on your knowledge of the law a little more. There is no federal requirement to register or have a permit to have a firearm! If you're thinking of the "FOID" that's in IL only.

Depending on whether it's a handgun or rifle/shotgun...

Hawaii, Illinois, Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York all require some kind of license or permit for purchase.

States also have varuious other training requirements or waiting periods.

You don't need a permit to buy a gun in West Virginia. You have to have a permit to carry a hand gun concealed. You don't need a permit to carry a handgun out in the open.

In order to buy any gun from a dealer in WV, you must have a background check.

Maine, you can buy a handgun on a 2 week waiting period, but no permit (federal law I believe)

Shotguns and Rifles over the counter with a valid drivers license.

In most states, you do not need a particular permit. However, almost all states require a background check with an associated waiting period. The waiting period allows the gun vendor time to complete the background check. The waiting period was also designed to prevent crimes of anger or immediate opportunity. The concept was that if you make a potential criminal wait 5-10 days before obtaining the gun, then they might reconsider the issue or the opportunity would be gone. This does have some merit. With regard to carrying the gun, a concealed weapons permit may be required. Most states require a concealed weapons permit to carry the gun (or other weapon) in your pocket, car, purse, etc. Most states allow the transport of a weapon if it has a couple of steps required before its use. For example, you can take a gun to a range if it is in a case, unloaded and in the trunk of the car. States have different rules, but the idea is that the weapon is not easily available. A concealed weapons permit will allow you in most cases to carry a weapon with you at all times as long as it is not seen by the general population. There are restrictions such as post offices, courthouses, and other federal/states buildings. Ironically, a bank is usually an acceptable place to carry a concealed weapon. But to answer your question simplistically, you usually do not need a permit to buy a gun if you are of legal age. Stay safe!

Usually there is also a waiting period.
