What would be the proper career name for people who:
1) gather evidence (and decide what would be evidence) from crime scenes
2) investigate the actual crime, i.e. talking to suspects, trying to figure out what happened, etc.
im NOT asking because i *watch too much tv* because i dont watch shows like csi. i really just want to know what these jobs are ACTUALLY called. and im not talking about forensics.

Police officers make the arrest.
Crime scene investigators...or CSIs gather the evidence.
Police detectives are the ones who investigate/solve the crime and interrogate suspects. |

1) Crime Scene Investigator; CSI (any officer can really point out anything as evidence but the CSI gathers it)
2) Detective, or even a Ranger (DPS) in Texas
Usually both are in the Criminal Investigative Division of the law enforcement agency.
This can all be agency specific, but that is what they are at my agency! |

Usually crime scene investigator, or technicians. I think it depends on the precinct you work for, and how they classify it. |

In most of the cases they are called: "POLICE OFFICERS".
What do you think they do all day . . sit in a donut shop and drink coffee?
Your average uniform police officer attends calls for service where their house was broken into, car stolen, car recovered and they do the investigation, gather evidence, talk to witnesses, do the paper work to the crown counsel and in the US they are called District Attorney and lay the charge.
In the more serious files like a mass murder etc, specialists are called in and if this is what you are referring to?: In Canada they are called Forensic Science and Identification Services personnel.
I don't know what they are called in the US and will not comment on the TV show CSI as that is total fantasy . . . it's good entertainment, but does not represent the real police world and solving crimes. |
