Is Gun Control The Answer?

I am curious as to what you think about gun control? In the past few weeks there have been several shootings. Is gun control the answer? Please, intelligent and thought out replies only. Law enforcement encouraged to answer

John De Witt:

He worries me too John. I think that some (not all) law enforcement get a "God complex". They start to get off on the control they have and being the only one permitted to carry a gun is a gigantic ego booster. I am not saying that Klint suffers from this, but he seems a little young and maybe not as experienced in his job. My brother in law is in law enforcement and has many years of experience. He says a lot of judgements and opinions change over the years on the job.

No.

I believe that EVERYONE should have and know how to use a firearm. That alone would drop the crime rate tremendously.

No, gun control is the problem.

People who are going to kill people won't be stopped due to gun laws.

It is the law abiding who are prevented from protecting themselves.

Not if crime prevention is the question

Gun control is not the answer to this rash of shootings these people wouldve gotten guns and carried out that attacks anyways. All gun control does is take guns away from law abiding citizens . I carry a CCL and I beleave the background checks we have in place do there jobs . To invite gun control as the answer to these shootings would be like saying ok well alcohol and tobacco kill alot more people then guns so lets get rid of them too.

Gun control measures that work to get weapons off the street would have to involve confiscation, including confiscation from people who up until their guns were banned, weren't criminals. It would bring more people into conflict with the law, and probably increase crime since it defines a greater number of people as criminals. It's not constitutional and out of accord with the traditional interpretation of the Bill of Rights as granting individual rights.

I honestly don't think that gun control is the right way to go. In comparison, drugs are illegal, yet hundreds of people are arrested everyday for their possession and dealing. So-called "gun amnesties" don't work either, as people are not willing to give up their weapons, especially as violent crimes are on the increase.
Many supposed "experts" such as psychiatrists and profilers have been commenting that we should all be on the look out for signs of a potentially dangerous person. How are we supposed to know if someone is going to wake up the next morning and begin a shooting spree? It seems that as a nation, we are at a bit of a standstill.

Thanks for the opportunity to voice our opinions,

Ryleigh.

22,000 gun laws, why would any sane person think we need more, when the ones we have now are not being enforced. The guy in NY shooting, according to what they say never should have had a gun, also the PA shooter had a Dishonorable Discharge, last time I checked that disqualified you from legal purchase of a firearm.

People like Klint worry me. As a policeman, he's statistically about five times more likely to kill an innocent person than is his civilian neighbor with a concealed-carry permit, and that would only get worse with stricter gun control. How about nut control? If you're going to trample on people's civil rights, it seems locking up troubled people would be much more effective and less intrusive on the rest of us.

Ms. N
Gun control is not the answer. You can put a thousand rules on the ownership and use of a weapon but if the person wielding it doesn't have the emotional capacity to handle his/her problems without resorting to lethal force all the rules in the world won't solve this problem.

Jeff S
I think everyone should be allowed to have a gun as long as they use it for the right reasons. Like hunting and defending yourself and your family.

I know they do background tests when selling guns but its pretty easy for a criminal to get a weapon. I dont know what anyone could do to stop morons from getting guns

No.we are controlled enough. More gun control will lead to more people obtaining guns illegally. Why should the law abiding citizen be forced to break the laws. Stricter laws would not mean less guns,or less insanity.

Bear
Laws preventing police that have to wait until fired upon to draw their weapons are the problems.
Ambushes will always be the most dangerous for police and most will be killed that way, police are expected to have their weapons but not look threatening when dealing with the public.

I personally carry a gun, know how to use it (very well). It is not the gun that sets up the ambush it the complacency of some. Look at the Dallas Police officer that pulled over Maots(sp) he drew his weapon and was pressured to quit, had it been the latest shooting( Pittsburgh) he would have killed the bad guy and been a hero.

BOBO
ABSOLUTELY!!! I could not agree more! A steady regiment of practice with the weapon of choice will insure a "one shot" hit on the perpetrator every time! If one takes "others safety" into consideration it is better to drop a perpetrator with one round than having to fire several rounds to take out the intended target.

Our future is history
Guns don't kill people...people kill people.
First of all, if you take guns away, the law abiding population are who you are taking them from. You can't expect criminals to turn in their guns when they have this mechanical advantage over their prey. Crime would get much worse, as this has proven in Australia.
Second, murder is the intent to kill, which lies within a persons mind, and not so much not in the means to the end. Gangs, and prisoners are proof...If they don't have a gun to kill with, they use a knife, car, sharpened stick, rock, or whatever else.
The Second Ammendment is the last thread holding our Constitution togeather.
In a time of seeing our out of control government leading the USA into Fascism, do you think handing over the American people's last line of defense against a potentially tyranical government is a good thing?
I don't!

Not even close to the anser.

I could get on my soapbox for hours about this, but I guess the best way to answer it is to point out the US cities with the most-restrictive gun laws...such as DC and NYC. Definitely not the kinds of places you want to be caught alone. Gun control essentially puts you in the position of being one of the helpless victims, while doing nothing to stop the criminals from getting guns.

Here's a study, completed in the 90s, by the National Center for Policy Analysis, which sums things up rather neatly.

Common sense would be the answer. Gun control in one form or another. Make it more difficult to get a permit to purchase even a handgun, never mind an assault rifle (hey, you live in a big city, not in the jungle, so why an assault rifle? Are "the russians coming?") Have some specific stores get permits for "distribution", like sports and hunting gear places. You can buy a gun at the corner Deli? Just a bit insane, don't you think?

Klint
I am in Law Enforcement.

Gun control IS the answer. Or at least bullet control hahaha too many innocent people seem to get hit.

It is way easier to pull a trigger than it is to run up to someone and stab them. You can shoot someone from across the street and run away. However if you had to get close to stab them or kill them some other way, chances are you'll think again.

I believe only the army and police should have them.
