I live in SHEFFIELD and I never lock my doors on purpose, but I never leave anything in the car so if anybody wants to look they can without causind £250 of damage, just to get nothing. the car is fitted with an immobliser so it is almost impossible to start. personally cannot see the point of locking the doors if there is nowt to pinch |

Yes. Where I come from they only started locking doors about ten years ago. It's so quiet the nearest policeman is thirty miles away and hardly ever needs to show up. The last burglary, indeed the only one I can remember, was twenty years ago, and the only car I ever heard of being stolen was about fifteen years ago. The biggest risk involved in parking outside the local (five miles away) pub was finding a drunk bloke in the front seat. Normally we'd drop him off at home... it was almost always the same guy.
That said, I don't live there now... which is a pity.
I've also left the keys in my motorbike overnight where I live now. The missus has left the car unlocked a couple of times. Ok, so it's off road parking in a pretty quiet neighbourhood, but just the same I wouldn't do it on purpose!
There's also a psychological thing. My missus has accidentally left the car unlocked in central Portsmouth when we lived there. Still there in the morning. Why? Because no one thinks there's anyone stupid enough to leave a car unlocked on a Portsmouth street. Not even the scabby little chavs who lived down the road. |

It's done on a regular basis in my village in rural Devon, car windows are left open as well. Stupid really. |

I have a little place on the west coast of Scotland and I regularly leave the car unlocked, sometimes because I just forget and sometimes I cant be bothered if my hands are full, never had a problem....but it is a little village..... |

I often don't bother to lock my car doors, I live in rural SW UK.
I lived in Brixton for 20 years and had my car broken into 3 times, my home burgled 3 times and mugged twice.
The only time my car was stolen was in Sheffield |

This would be down to chance really.
If you leave your car doors open then you are just as likely to have your car stolen than if you didn't leave your doors open. If a car criminal wants to steal your car then they will do so whether the doors are open or not.
A locked door is just one more lock to go through which generally takes seconds anyway so if its unlocked it just makes it slightly easier for the criminal. |

In rural parts of the highlands and islands of Scotland, not only are doors left unlocked, but the keys are left in the ignition. If its stolen on Orkney where will they drive? Its an island and they cant catch a ferry that runs once a day. |

Wherever you live, if you left your car door open, chances are everything would still be there in the morning.
Regardless I would not recommend that you do this. |

I do it frequently....It would take an imbecile to touch the car...We have 6 dogs...2 of whom do the job they are there for.. |

My fiancee is from a very very rural area where nobody ever locks any doors. seemingly 90% of vehicles stolen have the keys left in them! however, theres only about 1 car stolen a year!!! |

On Scottish islands and in rural areas in the Highlands most people leave their cars open and I have heard that some leave the ignition key in the car so that if anyone is stranded they can use the car to get home. (Don't advise you to try it in case it is not true!) |

I wouldn't recommend it. These scallies move about you know.
As a sideline, I know of some areas where the locals DO leave their cars unlocked, as a security measure - they know someone's going to break into their car anyway, but if the doors aren't locked, they won't do any damage on the way in!! |

safe in the Shetland Islands except in Lerwick on a friday night when a drunk might climb inside to sleep it off! |

I hardly ever bother locking my doors. I left the keys in by accident one night. I live in a village in Wiltshire. Then again, I have an old banger. If I had a new car I would lock them. |

I bought a brand new motorcycle before Christmas and twice I left the keys in it overnight in the road. And I live 20 minutes from the centre of London. Just a little lucky perhaps. |

I dont remember doing that but i wouldn't recommend it. Your making life easier for the robber. |

Only by accident!
Maybe I should leave the doors open so there would be less damage when thieves break in for my radio?? |

I think there isn't as big of a crime problem as people say.. Sure things get stolen, but you are really unlucky if it happens.
I don't personally know anybody that has had their car stolen or house broken into etc (Though I have heard it happen to a friend of a friend of a friend)
I can't say for cars, because I have never owned one.. but I never lock my doors when I go out. I have lived all over the place, small town , Bradford, inner city London. I currently live in Birmingham. I have never been broken into.
I'm also quite a forgetful, and often leave my purse in shops.. It is always still there when I remember and go back to find it. And when I have lost my purse people have returned it to me.
I used to leave my suit cases at Airports, train stations etc.. for a few hours and wander off if they were heavy.. when I was going on holiday.... nothing has ever been stolen.. but I can't do that now.. because security guards would think I'M a terrorist rather than very ditzy and tell me off.
I'm sure theft happens.. but I don't think it matters how security concious you are a thief can easy break I lock if he chooses. |

If you leave your car unlocked and it gets stolen your insurance company will not accept the claim or pay for any damage caused during its theft - read the small print of your insurance policy - it's in most of them.

i wouldn't advise it, not if you wanted any peace of mind, to do so without realising it is one thing, but to do it deliberately is another. |

i'm pretty sure if you do it smack bang in the centre of either london, birmingham, liverpool or any other given city everything would be just fine. xxxxx good luck!!!!! |

HEY KICKER,
What if the baseball cap had been stolen from the chap who's life you wrecked?
Or maybe he had lost it?
Or maybe given it to charity or given it away?
Perhaps it wasn't even his?
Perhaps the 5 people you asked just all happened to know this kid and so pointed the finger at him?
Or maybe you should have asked more than five people?
Perhaps you are just a thug and a criminal looking for excuses to act in a self rightious and criminal way... just like all the other crims.
KICKER:
Mmmm I see..
When he gets out next time, go round there and give him a couple of good slaps for me too!!!!!!!! |
