Is becoming a cop a good profession?

Profession? ....... I would argue that policing is a vocation, you must feel called to do it, if you are to be any good at it. Its not about the money, the power, or the uniform.

I joined and am still serving as I firmly beleive that the price of living in any community is service. I serve my community as a detective in child protection. I joined this job because I felt I was called to it. I cannot see myself doing anything else.

I hope this gives you some clarity and some understanding of what it takes to be an effective law enforcement officer

I can be a very good career. all depends on what u are looking to do and what type of department u join. As far as not being an mp, doesn't really matter, not in big city departments at least. some of the guys i work with have an accounting background, and they are very good cops. most departments require 2 yrs of college or 2yrs of military service. there are pros and cons of joining a large or small department. for big city departments, they pay is pretty good. in chicago, for example, u start out at about $43k a year and u make about $55k a year after about a year and a half and u get bumps in pay like every year till year 5. one of the good things of being in a large dept, is that u can do many different things, in case u get bored. for example, u can train to be a k9 officer, evidence tech, swat, marine unit, horseback, narcotics..or u can be promoted to detective.

I am a Brit and when I lived in Hong Kong in the 80's I worked for 3years in what was then the Royal Hong Kong Police. It was very interesting work and we were taught how to speak Cantonese, mind you we were given the rank of Inspector (2pips) so we always had our Chinese sergeant with us. We carried firearms but it was a dodgy place at times I suppose just like USA. If that's what you really want to do study hard and give it a go. Good Luck from UK at 5:15am

Yes, it is a good profession.

You are serving your community. I had trouble deciding whether to join the military or the RCMP (Mounties). I chose the military, and served Queen and Country for 25 years. Even though my pay was not all that great, serving gives you a wonderful feeling - you are useful.

When I joined (1977), the Mounties and the Canadian Forces paid fairly similar, but the Mounties pulled 'way ahead. Police pay is not that bad at all. However, it does have problems - you deal with the dregs of society on a regular basis, which takes it's tole. The divorce rate is higher, and most ex-cops die earlier than others, due to stress throughout their careers.

OTOH, you have an important job, trying to make the world a better place. What could beat that?

A profession is an occupation that requires extensive education or specialized training' I don't believe it is a profession. Any one can do it.
