The definition of feminine as it applies to this questions is having qualities traditionally ascribed to women, as sensitivity or gentleness.

So no, Policing is not a feminine career. While sensitivity has its place, being oversensitive does not. You deal with some pretty nasty situations that alot of people couldn't handle. You also need a thick skin as you are hated and constantly critized. Again, gentleness has its place, but you also have to be assertive and sometimes even forceful.

You wear work boots and carry a gun. You can't be afraid to get dirty. You deal with vuglar language and actions all the time. If you are in the reserves, you probably deal with this part anyway.

That being said, being a Police officer does not mean you can't be feminine. Off duty, I am feminine. Like alot of other women, I get dressed up, put on makeup, do my hair. Manincures are a waste of money cause some idiot always causes me to break a nail.

If its what you want to do, then do it. While your parents love you and want the best for you, you still have to live your life.

I think Female cops are portrayed as masculine because they have to seem tough to be listened to by thugs and bad guys.
I think if you go to college then you'll be more educated than other people, giving you an advantage and more chance of being employed, i wanna be a hairdresser, but im still going college and uni for the knowledge and the experience :)

On a terribly non PC note and with apologies to all hard working and excellent women police officers... I think female police are hot as hell... so no I don't think it's less feminine at all...strong maybe.. but not less feminine

if u want the truth..
it is less feminine than regular jobs, i know regular jobs might seem boring for you , but this is the case with most men, a lot of men don't like it when some girl is stronger than them, so he would call her less feminine instead of calling himself a wuss .

Now your parents might have a point , first of all... in a lot of states , female cops are treated in bad way , from people or from the cop department. also being a cop put u in a lot of risk and a demanding job which might decrease the opportunity of meeting guys from other normal fields.

if u want my own opinion.... do whatever makes u happy, if u really find that being a cop is the only thing u want to be , so be it.
i mean if ur above 5'8", strong, confident and like this kind of stuff, JUST DO IT. or try to make ur dream true by twisting it a little bit, like being an investigator, or anything but a field cop it would be nicer.

btw : a lot of guys fantasy chicks in cop suit ( have u seen J Lo in that movie )

You won't be less feminine just by being a cop.
As a cop, if you act macho, then of course you're less feminine, so it's more a personality thing. If you are a feminine, you stay feminine.
If you want to do it, you really should!

after that kind of education you should be considering a federal law enforcement or intelligence unit go for it there are more acronyms of adventure at that level than you can shake a stick at. and i know so pretty damn good feminine cops and they are all women and all cop when it comes time for that hat

i'd say finish up college and get your degree and go to the academy too. if you wanna protect and serve your state or town, i would say go for it. don't let anybody stop you from doing what you wanna do. work your way into the field, and i'd say go for detective!

I am not sure how college/police academy thing work out. But I will say this; If there is any lesson learned about YOUR life and what YOU want from it, you have to follow YOUR dreams. Your parents gave you life so you could live it. I've recently come to this realization. I could be sitting at a register making 13$ an hour and I ditched it for a job I've always wanted (outdoors) for a 2$ pay decrease. Are you worth your own happiness? There are many people out there wishing they could do things over, don't let something as valuable as a career be that thing. It is your decision, so you should do what you want to make yourself happy. The rest will eventually fall into place. It might take some time for your parents to see that, but hopefully they will come around. Feminine or not, its your dream. Shouldn't the time to be selfish about your life be in college when you're less tied down and ready to experience new things for yourself?

Maybe calmly explain to them this is what would make you happy and leave it at that. As for college and/or police academy, I have friends that majored in criminology and have no problem getting jobs. Part of that major is doing police academy related courses. I hope that helps you out. Good luck chasing your dreams :D

You can be stronger, tougher, and more capable of handling yourself than other women and still be just as feminine.
It's your dream. I know a female cop that is feminine. . she's a former Marine and she can drop a 250 lb guy. . but she's still feminine.
College is always a good idea, you're more likely to get in with a degree.

college wouldn't make a difference. you still have to go to the academy, but depending on your degree, you may be placed somewhere special like homicide, or vice.
