I'm 31, I had some adventure travelling around the world after graduating college, and I've become increasingly sure that I want to be a police officer.
I'm a little concerned, though, cause even though I'm disciplined, have a college degree, speak Spanish and am in good shape, there are some things that might not look good on my application. For example, I smoked marijuana once 2 years ago, I did a lot of job-hopping when I was living abroad, and I have about 7500 in debt and medium credit.
Would these make it difficult for me to become a cop?

The major issues are:
Have you turned your life around?
Are you now a responsible adult?
Even though you have some credit debts, are you managing them appropriately?
Are you scrupulously honest?
If you can answer favorably to the above, you shouldn't have any issues. Hiring departments might want to wait a little after the marijuana use, but it shouldn't be a problem.

None of that is a dealbreaker.
You may need another year or two between the marijuana use and getting hired (depending on the department), but you aren't permanently disqualified based on those facts. |
