I was wondering Is it illegal to film a cop? I live in a small town were cops do the dumest things and wished i had a video camera. example When i was in highschool waiting to get picked up a cop was racing a guy in front of the highschool and he gave the peace sign to him and made a quick turned... didnt get a license plate #.. and many more but anyway Can you film a cop from a distance where you are not in their face or inturrpting their job? If you get caught filming and they confiscate it is that legal? They can't confiscate your property without your consent or a court order right??

There is clear cut answer to that.
It would depend on if the officer was in an area where he has no reasonable expectation of privacy. It would also depend on if your filming distracted him in any way.
If he was performing field sobriety tests on a suspected drunk driver, and the drunk was paying more attention to you than the officer, you will be ordered to stop.
They do not need a court order to confiscate your camera if it is being used in an illegal manner. |

No it is not! You should record police activities any and every chance you get. They record the public so you should do the same. This helps in insuring that the police who violate civil rights get into trouble for doing so. They will however try to get you to stop and even stand in front so that you can not get a clear view as to what is going on. That is kind of shady don't you think. What would have happened if there was no one around to video tape the beating of Rodney King? As long as you are not interfering and are a safe distance away then it is perfectly legal! Tape them as often as you can. If they have nothing to hide then why should there be a problem?
If they have nothing to hide and they do their job as they are supposed to then why would any police officer have an issue with a citizen video taping them? They use video evidence as proof so why would the public not be able to do the same?
