I hope they can. No, its not polite, and maybe not always appropriate, but look at what some go through in their lifetime, or even on a daily basis. I should hope they swear a little now and then and release a little tension.
I know I would need a good temper tantrum or swear session now and again to deal with law enforcement.
I think a little f-bomb and whatever here and there should be accepted. These men and women do a lot, lets at least give them the right to BE mad as hell when they are. |

Laws vary state to state, and Country to Country. Chances are it was legal, and it probably happens a lot. I am not excusing the unprofessional behavior, but, that cop may have seen the aftermath of someone else's traffic infraction that ended up a lot more tragically the hearing the word motherf---er |

Not illegal, but it may be against the department policy. In any case, I agree that that was inappropriate and rude.
Since he issued you a citation, you have his badge number and name. Call the department that he is part of and ask to speak with a supervisor about the incident.
Or, you could be nice and give him a break, assuming that he was just having a bad day.
Up to you, best of luck either way. |

I don't think so sweety, sorry. |

Were you with your brother? I think a cop can cuss if he wants. Its freedom of speech. Your going by hear say of the story what your brother told you. If the cop wants to cuss, its not against the law. Your brother breaking the law, was. |

It's only unprofessional, not illegal, maybe next time your brother will stop at the stop signs and then he won't have to worry about a cop yelling at him. |
|

Oh Nooooo!
 |
I wouldn't think it would be illegal, but it probably IS against some kind of police policy. I would probably file a complaint with the department. I wouldn't expect much to come out of it, but maybe if enough people complain, something will. |

Not calling your bother a liar.
But we get complaints all the time of Officers cursing at people, yelling at them, threatening them, ect.
So we go pull the video and see nothing like that.
People who get pulled over don't understand the situation fully, hear what they want to hear and try to put blame on everyone else.
What you posted might be exactly what happened. But I'd bet there is more to the story. |

In the situation that you describe, I would place that in the gray area closer to the side of not allowed. The police have to remain polite until the suspect starts running/resisting/fighting. In your case if I was the cop, I wouldn't have done it but I would have been thinking it. |

Were you with your brother??
I'd be interested in hearing directly from the cop, but I guess what he said would be a lie, |

In over 20 years of Law enforcement, I have never seen an Officer act this way. I am HIGHLY doubting your brothers story, but it should ALL be on the dashcam, Go request a meeting with the Chief of police or the officers supervisor, but be prepared to see just what kind of a liar your brother is. |

Wow!
I'm impressed by all the answers.
Enough said. |

Profanity is NOT constitutionally protected speech. It may or may not be illegal depending on the state and local laws where you live.
I would bet it violates Police department policy, but as others have pointed out, it is your brother's word against his. It is a shame that so many police do things like this that breed disrespect for the law. |

its not illegal but its not really morally right |

It's not illegal, but an officer should be a better role model to the public. There are plenty of good officers out there but every organization has their share of bad apples and the police force is no exception |

Of course it is not legal, professional, or moral but there are a lot of things the police do simply because they can, and do get aways with most of this questionable and immoral unprofessionalism. |

No it goes against the professionalism they need to uphold! You could get him in trouble, if it mattered to you. But, why? People do worse things. I mean if the tables were turned and you swore at the cop, it would be ok? |

yes they can , so can fish and game ,sheriff's c.h.p. and the two hundred plus citizen police in every city. |

Is it legal, yes. Is it professional, of course not. That being said, there are three side to every story..your side, my side, and somewhere in the middle lies the truth. Did your brother provoke this verbal misconduct, or was the officer just out of line. Usually, it is a bit of both. |
|

Yes. The only thing constraining an officer's language is his/her department's policies and procedures. |

I don't think it is illegal but I'm sure it is against the rules of the police department for them to be abusive of people like that.
But the bottom line is, it's him and you there. You can complain about it but it's his word against yours. Cops always do stuff like that. Just strapping on the badge and gun turns them into God in their eyes. Get used to it.
You watch shows like Cops and they're all "Sir please put your hands up!!! Don't make me ask you again sir!" Please, do you think it would be like that if the cameras weren't there? |

File a formal complaint with the police dept.
That's completely uncalled for...I think he was looking for some sort of confrontation. |

just nod your head and say "yes sir"
this is how i have gotten out of tickets.
if it is not working, try a bl*w job, most cops appreciate that! |

No, they are not supposed too, but then again pigs, I mean cops get away with everything else, one day people will tire of public officials, abusing their power, and changes will occur. Until then these fascist will get away with everything, they can. |

go to the main branch or office of the police service that this officer belongs to ,and take your brother, and the ticket with you. tell the officer at the front desk you wish to file a formal complaint against the officer in question and give him the badge number of the officer involved from the ticket but do not give him the ticket. he will either give you a form to fill out or he will send you to the aproprate person or floor. and no its not right he should be reprimanded, if it continues then he should be fired!!! police chiefs must take responsibity for their officers behaviour. especially when its bad!!!!!!! But I'd tell him to drop it because the cops will only go out of their way to give him more tickets trust me bin there done that.. choice is yours or his. |

No it is not right. However, it is legal in a sense that the cop did not break any laws (first amendment.) However, the police should have rules that forbid such treatment. If it really bothers your brother, then go see a lawyer and see what can be done. |

it must be, they do it all the time.... but they'll cuff you real quick if you cuss back |
