A little vague, but....
You may put anything in your yard, on your property, that does not conflict with local building or property ordinances. that your neighbor is miffed about it means little other than you are the one who has to live next door to him. |

That depends on what kind of container you are talking about. |

I think you'd better put foil over all your windows and watch out for the guys in the Black Suburbans... |

I very much doubt that there is any state law describing what containers and purposes are permitted/prohibited in your backyard. So, no, the police cannot make you take it out. The police are also not enforcers of HomeOwners Associations.
There may well be city ordinances that do prohibit certain containers, but enforcement of that consists of a written notice by the Code Enforcement Officer for the city that you must comply with the code. Failure to comply within a specified time (such as 7 days) may result in a city fine.
If your neighbor is yelling about calling the police, it means he has no more idea about the law than you do, and is just making noise. Don't worry about him. |

If you are talking about an ocean/rail shipping container in your back yard, there may very well be zoning ordinances prohibiting this. Depends where you live. |

It depends on what kind of container you are talking about also, regulations about what you can legally have in your property vary considerably. You should contact your city government for the best answer. |

Depends on what the container is, the size, etc. I don't believe it's illegal however it may be against HOA rules. Check with your HOA (home owners association) - if it is against the rules you would have to remove it, otherwise they can fine you for it. |

1) What type of container? Pop can, Garbage dumpster?
2) It would depend on the code for your jurisdiction. |

It should be legal. If it's your property then you have the right to put anything in your backyard. |
