you may have a loose bulb, electrical wire loose , or loose terminal. Your light may work fine for example until you hit a bump then there's your problem. check it out before jumping to conclusions |

tell the next officer who does this that you need to see it because you keep getting pulled over for it but when you check it, it's fine. that way you have the accusing officer right there to check it with you.
it is possible that you have some sort of short in your tail light. |

I really doubt three random Police Officers stopped you (for the exact same violation) over a six month period for a light that was in perfect working order. You probably have some sort of short or wiring problem. If you get pulled over again respectfully tell the Officer that you have been stopped for this before and that when you get home all the lights seem to be working. Then ask him/her if they will show you the light they are talking about. They will not beat you like Rodney King if you get out of the car with permission.
If you feel like the stops were made under false pretense then file a complaint. I really doubt they were but you can always complain.
Also, the person that posted that you have a right to get out of your car and look at your taillight doesn't know what they are talking about. The US Supreme Court has ruled that the Police may make you stay in your car during a traffic stop and that if you fail to comply with their orders you could be charged with a crime. Like I said, just ask the Officer to show you the light they are talking about. |

You really think 3 cops randomly used the same "lie" to pull you over?? Did you ever think that when your actually driving it goes out for some reason? Stop trying to get pity.. |

"I have driven home and found that the tail light is in fact working."
Are you absolutely sure about that. Perhaps it is the brake light that's out. Did you check your brake lights? If their is nothing wrong with your car, I'm surprised they are pulling you over to check you out. A drunk driving case can be thrown out of court if the reason for the traffic stop isn't legitimate. If they wanted to lie to pull you over, they could just say you were driving erratically. You can't prove that you weren't, but it's easy to prove your taillights were working.
"...and if I was to ask to get out of the car and see it for myself, he'd probably beat me like Rodney King."
Actually, I don't think they would hold it against you. I was pulled over for a taillight once and I got out and opened the trunk. The socket popped out of the filter. I popped it back in and he sent me on my way with no ticket. |

You have a right to get out and see the burnt out taillight for yourself right were your stopped. He will look like an idiot on his camera and sense his probable cause went up in smoke you are free to go. Don't hold a conversation with him just let him know he was busted and file a complaint. You should always keep a tape recorder in your car cause theirs always seems to malfunction. |

Just to narrow it down...Can you prove that? If not remember that 60's song? I fought the law and the law won..Buy new tail lights and keep the pesky porkers off your back....its better than a fine and possibly jail |

Hi,
I don't think it is harassment because you can't really prove that the light wasn't working at the time they pulled you over. If you actually got out with them and found the light to be working, then maybe it could be harassment. If you don't have proof, and go and report them, they could easily say that it wasn't working when they saw it/pulled you over.
Good Luck! |

just say "could you show me which one please? I know they were both working when I left home"
if they won't show you it can be harrassment |

I ve had a similar experience with the local cops too. Only their excuse was they were looking for stolen vehicles. That my kind of vehicle (Toyota FJ Cruiser) is reported stolen often. That I failed to use my turn signal more than 150 from the corner where I turned. I told him ("are you telling me I can`t change my mind and decide to go another way") to my destination. Then they ask if they can search my car I tell them NO. You ll need to wake up a judge and get an order. Then I`ll let you search. (I do this cause I know I dont have anything). They like to use any traffic violation to pull you over and they will always call it PROBABLE CAUSE. Anyways if you are clean..mess with them too like me. I like to pull the race card out too. I`m like "what just because I`m a Mexican means I cant be driving a Toyota. I think another factor is that I drive late at night to the local Wal Mart about 2 or 4 in the morning because I work nights so this is like noon to me. Anyways good luck. |

I don't think that three law enforcement officials would stop you unless there was a problem with your taillight. If your light is burned out, then they do have PC (probable cause) to stop you.
Some cars have a light in the back window. Could the officer be referring to that light instead of the taillights? In some states, the back light in the window does not have to be operational. However, with respect to both of your tailights, you probable should give them a test.
Have someone sit in your and put the brake on the pedal; see if the red taillights come on;
Turn on your lights, and your back lights should be working; and
Test your turn signals and 4-way blinkers. |

The cops in the town I live do that all the time, they love no tail light, no front liscenst plate, burnt out liscence light etc. Petty issues to get you to pull over. People now were I live get out and make the cop show them which light was burnt out and what not. |
