Is it rude to actually ask someone with a uniform on about who they are in their private lives....?

Asking anyone you don't know about their personal life is going to come across at a minimum as a minor invasion of privacy. When you do that with a police officer, you're going to set off alarms--how is the officer to know who you are and for what purpose you intend to use the information? Police officers deal with the criminal element every day and routinely receive threats and offers of bribes.

Asking a police officer personal questions when you don't have a personal relationship with that officer is, in short, threatening behavior regardless of your intent. If you want to get to know the officer, let him/her know of that and let them initiate contact.

I don't think it is rude if done the right way. Don't be surprised if they are not open about their private lives. When you spend a good part of your life in the public eye your off duty life out of the public view is precious.

I don't know about being rude or not but, I am not going to tell anyone about my personal life. If they are a friend, they know all they need to and if I don't know them they can just keep their fantasies to themselves.

No more rude then having them ask about your private life. Maybe ask why you want to know. As a long time cop, I have been asked a lot of things & was never offended very much.

since they are trained not to talk about their personal lives don't feel bad if they cut you off and are short, if they walk away, if they change the subject, etc. It also depends on what exactly the person in uniform was paid to do. For instance, a security guard may be friendly (to a point) if you live in the apartment they watch.

I think before being too aggressive maybe ask if it's ok, or maybe give a little compliment or two to ease up, tell a cute little inoffensive joke (nothing about donuts) might help.

Start off with friendly banter always seems like a good start. asking questions about what they like best about their job, positive things to try first, doesn't seem too harmful.

Hi, you would not get an answer off them- police keep themselves private, and only mix with other law enforcers, to protect-themselves- and their families.
