As a British police officer i would first like to say that to all you people that make judgements about the effectiveness of this nation's constabularies, try doing our job for just one day.
Our force is one of the few in the world where we serve the public and are not an extension of the military. I am proud that we are able to resolve some of the most violent of situations without ever having to resort to drawing a firearm.
We are equipped with other tools, including unarmed combat skills. This takes more effort to learn and use effectively than pulling a trigger. But it is a lot less fatal!
To arm all police would be wrong. Some officers do not want to be put in the "me or you" situation where someone has to get hurt. However, the increase in shootings and the killing of police officers is a great concern.
I believe that there should be an increase in trained officers across the country, but not to arm all officers as "general issue". |

Are you serious?Do you really want to see a friend or neighbour shot dead by trigger-happy cops? |

Arm them, and then next year, give the buggers some legs so they can patrol the streets instead of sitting on their **** driving a squad car around all day. |

Yes and lock them up for delaying the general public like this.......nightmare this week at our airports caused by so thew. |

God no! Would you seriously feel safer having men with guns ON THE STREETS? The English police armed units seem to do a good line in killing innocent men, and these are the trained elite, so no one would be safe when every idiot bobby has a six-gun. |

NO. They find it hard to find criminals now. Give them toys they will never be available. Change the law. Get caught with a gun life in prison. Lets face it if they shoot someone it is never their fault. So they could decide to clear up a town and just shoot who they want. |

Yes otherwise how would they hold their truncheons?! |

personally I dont think we should I think the dangers arising due to the police holding arms is much greater than the risk posed to them or us.
in my opinion the risk is grossly over inflated.
7/7 only 56 people died, thats no where near the 180 that died falling down the tube escalators that year.
I think more guns equals more shooting and more death
I would rather live in a free society and risk terroist attrocities than live in a police state with so much restriction in relative safety.
however you cannot stop terrorism
so why restrict all our live and endanger us even further by carrying guns |

no because we cant even run to get the train if we have a tan the police are the bigest racist in the country and would use the weapons at will they do with the batons they have i took a beating with one of these for trying to get out the way of a fight outside a club if these cops had guns i would have been shot |

No, most crime in the UK doesn't require an armed response. It's still relatively rare in the UK for criminals to be armed with firearms. |

I'll gladly harm a policeman..... oooops, sorry, i mis-read that.
Why should the british polive be armed? they are dangerous enough without projectile weapons. Let them prove they are competant first. |

absolutely NOT. some of the police are worse than the terrorists, with the institutional racism going on in the police force. Half of them are on a power trip so they would just be shooting anyone!!! |

Most of the british police are armed infact most carry fire arms in the boot of a car; and have done so for years, my brother-in-law is in the Police Force here in the UK and I know what ia m talking about from personal experince. When i Lived with them over ten years ago now he had a rifle in his boot of his car! |
