I took a group of young first offenders to Atlanta Metro Prison for a "Prison Awareness" class run by our State Court Judges. We toured through the facility including the kitchen.
There were boxes and boxes of banannas. So many in fact, that one of the girls asked.
The first consideration on what to feed inmates is cost. Banannas, like many other fresh commodities have a definite shelf life - and their worth can be measured on a bell curve Dark green and yellow-brown banannas are worth the least, and green to yellow bannanas are suitable for retail, and therefore the most costly.
Bannannas are a cheap source of nutrition, and can be folded into various recipes for added caloric content.
This carbohydrate-rich diet can help to explain the doughy appearance of long term inmates.
What gave me the creeps was giant cans of applesauce from China.
How crazy can this be when the cost of transporting applesaucefrom halfway around the world becomes cheaper than domestic applesauce? |

Absolutly not true. I work in a prison with men and woman and bananas ARE allowed. They dont get them often because of shelf life but inmates to have bananas |

Not true - I work in a prison with men and women. They get bananas whenever the local grocery donates extra boxes. Prison folklore goes that once upon a time, the bananas were given to the female inmates already peeled. |
