Is it true that during Katrina police and other authorities went around New Orleans taking guns away from peo?

There is much paranoia about the potential loss of gun rights, ie: the loss of 2nd the amendment. Is it true, or is someone just stirring people's emotions?

Crazy Dave
Yes they did you can see it on you tube. People were in their own boats and trying to get to safer ground. The police and national guard asked law abiding citizens if they had any weapons and the said yes. They were wrapped up or in gun cases not in the open and not being used for crime. These were law abiding citizens not criminals. The then took their guns away from them. I will try to get back later with the link or the name of the video on you tube for you to watch. It was a big deal on the news right after it happened.

Go to you tube videos and look up these videos.

NRA: The untold story of gun confiscation after Katrina.

The great New Orleans gun grab.

Why do they want our guns.

Or just search for videos under the heading "Martial Law After Hurricane Katrina".

To those who said it never happened you are either in denial, blind, or just misinformed about what really happened.

Make sure you pay close attention to the one about the elderly woman that they tackled in her own home.

Cptainamer
That did in fact happen at the direction of the Mayor of New Orleans. At a time when people had the greatest need to protect themselves, the NRA got heavily involved in publicizing it.

It seems to have happened some. The way I understand it, some of the local police and some but by no means all of the out-of-state National Guard units did so, where others did not.

NOLA guy
Yes. It was mostly the military but some police were confiscating firearms. It was not just in New Orleans and also happened in Mississippi.

In New Orleans, military units went to the not-flooded parts of the city, entered occupied private homes against the will of the owners and without authority except verbal orders from an apparently vague source, searched the homes without a warrant or other legal justification, and confiscated any firearms found. They then left, abandoning the newly-disarmed homeowners to whatever fate awaited them.

Note that Martial Law was NOT declared in New Orleans or anywhere else in the Katrina-devastated area.

Congress passed a law in 2006 to make it clear that such behavior is both illegal and unconstitutional. I hope it works.

Yes they did. Instead of helping people, and save them, they went around making sure that people did not loot the stores. And isn't that really stupid because the stores were underwater. So no one could take anything. America was not ready for this disaster. We are still not ready for any disaster. We need to get better plans in place. And bush was the worst president we have ever had.

They didn't take them away from law abiding citizens that were protecting their homes (and themselves). If they took away any guns, it was from people who were using them illegally (like the morons that were shooting at helicopters) or people trying to take them into the Super Dome.

Joe from WI
The thugs of New Orleans had more guns than the cops did.

Good Woman
no one shot at rescuers and they did not take guns the women in the super dome should have had gun so they could have e from all the rape and other thing that men were doing to them during katrina Coz the police where shooting at innocent people half the time when they weren't stealing s h i t not there were some good ones

I didn't hear anything like that I did hear that police were going door to door telling people they needed to evacuate. I actually watched this Spike Lee documentary and the people they interviewed said that there were people with guns.

Doc
No. If that were true, there would have been no one shooting at the rescuers when they arrived.
