It depends on the jurisdiction, but yes it does happen. The main issue is security. The apartment management advertises the presence of a police office tenant, as a selling point. It is also done as reciprocation for hours worked as off duty security on the property. Any off duty work usually must be approved by administration. It has a big downside though, the officer can never seem to relax because other tenants are always bothering him/her.

It really depends on what country they live in. I know that the RCMP isn't aloud to accept that kind of "special treatment" although it would be really nice if they were able to. My bf is a Mountie and trust me sometimes I wish we got special treatment. LOL. However I do do believe that when an officer is stationed in some backwoods place ie up north/small towns, due to the fact that one officer usually leaves for another to be stationed there the one coming in would just buy that house off of him. Or something to that effect....

There was a time. Landlords offered extremely discounted rent as a means to get free security.

Many departments wrote policy against it as time went on. You don't see it as much now as you used to.

Not as a rule, but being a landlord, if I had a cop apply to rent one of my units I may lower the rent just to get a cop (free security) in the building.
