typical everything was peaceful and someone had to bust a cap (many caps). I'm glade he shot the looser. If that cop wasn't there more people would of died |

Absolutely a heroic effort. |

Darn tootin' he is. That's how the west was civilized there partner. They didn't have no ACLU giving the killers more rights back then..... |

Yes, he's a hero. |

 |
Yes he is unless your a lefty lib. In that case the 18 year old was a victim and the policeman was a fascist thug. Wish there were more officers like him. Good job! |

He is a hero because he saved a lot of peoples lives. As long as he did the best he could not to kill him in the first place. Most police officers will not kill a person unless it is considered necessary |

Yes, he is. He used his training and subdued a criminal. Doesn't matter if he was 18 or 43, a criminal is a criminal. |

Yes, he is. A brave man and a hero. Did you know that the 18 year old man was a Muslim refugee from Bosnia? That sure wasn't reported, was it? Imagine that. |

Yes he is a hero. Too many times people blame the police for shooting someone like this. I hear he was just a boy. The officer could have done something else.
My answer is he was a boy with a gun and the intent of killing everyone. He could have done something else like stay home. Instead he chose to shoot Innocent people. He got what he deserved and the officer did the right thing. You can bet he did not want to go into a restaurant and ruin his meal by having to shoot a young man or see others shot.
He is a hero and he should be commended for his action. |

Since it is evident that the 18 yr old would have shot more people I do believe the police officer is a hero. |

I think that officer is definitely hero. Any one who risks hisher life to keep innocent people free from harm is a hero.
I would have loved to have seen several law abiding citizens exercising there 2nd amendment right (to keep and bear arms) who were shopping in the mall with there family who upon hearing the shots returned fire killing the crazed gunman. These are the people America needs to help keep us safe. |

He has my vote and the city better give him keys to it,,!!! |

Of course he is a hero. Anyone who decides it is their prerogative to kill innocent people in a shopping mall should be gunned down! |

Yes he is. Alot of people have negative views on police. They are basically doing their jobs. You get alot of bad cops, but then you get guys like this. He deserves a medal. |

Absolutely! His police training has prepared him for anything, including the heroic act of killing that 18-year-old punk who was shooting up that mall! Had he not done so, the young fool would continue killing more people in his wake! Kudos to him for ending further bloodshed!!!! |

Most definately a hero. A police officer that saved countless lives doing his job even while off duty. There should be more of this kind of man in many police force. |

In my opinion ALL Police Officers, Firemen and Military personnel are Hero's...but in the end they are just doing their job on or off duty....In this specific incident he and the other officers that responded put themselves in the line of fire to save lives. It was my understanding that the shooter turned his gun on himself in the end. |

i am glad he did it
BTW a off duty cop is always on duty ( hence why he had his gun on his early valetine dinner date with his wife )
i am glad he killed the kid |

Most definitely!!!!!! He ran towards the danger and saved countless lives. Just another day in the life of a cop. You never know when or where you will be when the call comes. He should be given a medal! |

If you ask that officer, he would tell you that he is no hero. He was just doing what he was trained to do.
If you ask anyone else, especially all those other people in that mall, they would tell you different. The young man had already shot and killed five, and wounded several others before the officer was able to engage and stop him. True to his training, and directly opposite what normal people would do, he ran TOWARDS the danger, not away. He could have easily stayed with his family and guarded them...nobody would have said a word against him. Next time you see video of a disaster in the making, see who runs to the trouble and runs away from the trouble. That takes something from down deep inside and not everyone has that. Hero? I'd call that a vast understatement. |

I THINKS SO BECAUSE SOMEONE COULD OF BEEN REALLY HURT OR EVEN MAYBE DEAD MAYBE THE DEAD PART SHOULDN'T HAD HAPPENED BUT U NEVER KNOW SO YES I WOULD CALL HIM AS A HERO HE SAVED LOTS OF PEOPLE IN DANGER BUT ITS ALSO SAD FOR THE VICTIM OR GUNMAN |

There are probably many opinions on this subject. I would say yes though. I hadnt heard until now |

It would have been a lot better if the officer disabled the 18 year old instead of killing him but, in that kind of situation who knows what a person would do. Kudos to the officer for ending this horrific rampage! |

Yes, he is an unqualified hero. He was not, ultimately, the police officer who killed the terrorist, but he prevented him from shooting at other civilians until on-duty police officers could arrive. |

Jackie, Whitney:
He is not a hero?
what the hell would you have done? Stood in a puddle of piss with a snot bubble hanging from your nose hoping and praying to whatever God you bow your head to that some "non-hero" OFF DUTY cop bails your *** out.. Yea you are right, just doing his job. What frickin job? he was NOT working!!!
Yea you two are the real heroes

I see that you are talking about officer Ken Hammond who is an Ogden Utah police officer. Yes i would say that he was a hero but i also say that there are others that are hero's. For an example there was the shop owners/workers they would let people into the shops and then they would lock the doors and turn off the lights. They would let the people in the back rooms of the store and tried to provide the mall customers and others from getting in harms way. I would also say that some of the customers could be hero's because some of them would put there life on the line to save others. Other customers could spread the word what is going on and run with the other people to get out of trolley square mall. I would say that all of the policemen are hero's so is also the other emergency people even the doctors i would consider. Yes some of the police officers did go in and kill the guy that was causing all of the trouble. I have heard stories of a nurse i believe who was also off duty tried to stay with a man and help him with his injuries. The doctors at the different hospital that are keeping those alive I would consider a hero. There are lots of hero's around us. Any policemen or woman on duty or not would do the same thing that officer Hammond did. |

"The police offier was out gunned"...I don't know good of a shooter the officer or attacker was. The results of the situation show that the officer was a better shooter. It dosn't matter if you have an 5 assults rifles if you don't know how to shoot you don't know how to shoot. |

I may not call him a hero but I do beleive he saved lives. It is truly sad what kids do these days, I will never understand. |
