Well Michael, there may be an age limit at the moment in the UK, I am not sure however this may well be challenged soon with the new age discrimination regulations coming into force. If the Police Force is given exemption from the rules as a GOQ (Genuine Occupational Qualification) I have not yet looked up. It will be a matter of wait and see.

Contact your local Police station and ask them.

Like many have said it is dependant on where you are. I went through the police academy when I was 52 and worked for 10 years after that. Of course I had been working in corrections prior to attending the academy. This was in Florida.

Obviously yes as the job entails loads of physical fitness, so the age bracket is between 18 and 40

The agency where I work at now and most of the surrounding areas go with the age of 35 or 39 with 4 years of military service or law enforcement experience. Some will do the same with the age of 45 or 49. Hope this helps you out.

i'd say so. Just like in any job. you're usually too old to be changing jobs if your close to 60. But I've seen people try.

Each city (Police Dept.) has it's own standards, so it you seek out an area, some have schooling standards too, not just age. Degrees are big in the Police Dept. but not so demanding in the Sheriff's Dept. and so on. It's as easy as a phone call and getting a form.

The official retirement age for coppers in the UK at the moment is 55 yrs of age. So I guess they are not going to take you on too close to that age.

I know people who have joined in their late forties - almost 50 and with the new age discrimination stuff coming in later this year, who knows what will happen.

As long as you can pass the necessary tests etc. to get in, then people of all ages and backgrounds have a lot to offer to policing - DIVERSITY being the name of the game!
