There are quite a few different types and grades of OC Pepper spray. You have water and oil based ( oil based being the stronger). You have spray, stream and foam types in sizes from 3 oz up to fire extinguisher size for crowd control.
OC Pepper is rated by it's SHU (Scoville Heat Units), which is a measurement system that determines the "burn" of an object on the bare skin. As an example, a jalapeno pepper is rated at 7,500 SHU. The Def Tech (Defense Technologies) OC pepper spray ( oil based) is rated at 25,000 SHU. (This is the brand carried and used by my department). Phase IV OC Pepper spray, which is carried by our State Police as a secondary backup spray is rated at 2,000,000 (two million) SHU.
As noted above me, there are other brands that go all the way beyond 5 million SHU. The problem with the really hot sprays is the legal liabilities that are incurred in secondary and permanent damages resulting from hot sprays used too long. A 5 million SHU spray into the eyes will melt the eyeballs and blister the surrounding skin, which is why our department uses Def Tech at the more moderate 25,000 rating. Far more than enough to stop an attack or fight but not so hot that it damages to the point of civil liability.

There is a few types. There some that is intended for law enforcement only, That are much stronger and spray much further. Then there is mace that makes pepper spray look like Kool aid. |

My agency uses Sabre Red, which comes in at 2 million SHU. The stuff is hot, let me tell you. Almost every other agency in my area (that I have noticed) uses Sabre Red.
You cannot purchase the law enforcement grade from the company unless you are law enforcement. This is typical of most companies. |

Most pepper sprays are between 1/2 million and 2 million shu. Fox Labs brand pepper spray is refined to 5.3 million shu.
Fox Labs pepper spray is the hottest in the world currently, used by the Military and Law enforcement, but also available for public used. |
