Is this OK to be happening?! This is a question about cops/sheriffs!!?

I was hanging out with my friends until 11pm Friday night. I called my dad to pick me up. Of course, he was sleeping. He just pulled on pants, grabbed is keys, and went down the street to get me. My friends were sleeping over so my dad was my only ride home. We live across the street from my church and when we were driving back, the police were directing traffic into the church parking lot. They were doing a DUI testing for people that have been drinking at this place called the twisted martini. That is about 5 miles away from the church. We told the police my dad didn't have his licince because he was getting me down the road. We gave the police the car registration and my dad gave him his information but they still gave him a ticket. We told them that we lived right behind the church but the guy fined my dad $76.50 for no licinces. They had every cop in Ponte Vedra, which is where I live, to St. Augustine test for DUI 5 miles away from the closest bar. Is this the law or is this bad?

Not sure about the law there, but here (MN) that is legal.

It is completely legal for law enforcement agents to setup DUI test points. They often do it in places where drunk driving is a problem. Unfortunately, driving anywhere even around the block without a license is illegal. Just remember from now on that the cops maybe doing this in your area.

Having a driver's license and NOT carrying it with you while you operate a motor vehicle is illegal.

1. The police are free to conduct DUI check-points wherever they want to, it's legal.
2. It's probably a good thing to do, not a bad thing.
3. Usually "in most places" driving without your license in your possession is a "fix-it" kind of ticket and if you go to court, or sometimes to the police station, with your valid license the ticket can be signed off and dismissed with no fine. That might not be the case in Ponte Vedra. That I have no idea.

And whats the problem? You must have your drivers license at all times not matter if you are driving 2 houses away. It is just like insurance in most states, you must have proof of insurance at all times or your veh can be towed. As far as entrapment for doing the DWI checkpoint, did the deputies put the bar there, did they make everyone drink at the bar, NO. So if your going to say it is entrapment, your wrong. For all of those people that don't know what entrapment means here is the definition:
Entrapment is the act of a law enforcement agent in inducing a person to commit an offence which the person would not have, or was unlikely to have, otherwise committed.[

This is why no matter WHERE you are going, HOW far away it is, and What you are doing, ALWAYS keep your drivers license on you. Officers cannot believe EVERYTHING that is told to them. Sorry.

yeah thats right if you dont have your licence on you its an automatic fine. and the fact that they had it 5 miles away fromt the bar is just because they want to be unpredictable and people cant say ill drive there because they'll be no cops but there will be.

It's the law. If they were within, I think its 50 feet of a bar it's called entrapment. Tell pops to keep his license with him all the time, some cops can be d*cks. The cop could have just ran his name and social but apparently he didn't.

All he has to do is show up in court with his License and it will be dismissed
Also learn your drivers license number if you can give that info they would have let him go.
I have been stopped before without my license and I give them my number and they did let me go without a fine, this also happened on the lake while riding my jetski and the game warden didn't have a problem with it either.

If they were nice, which I've never met a cop that was, they would have had one of their officers follow you to your home so your dad could prove he had one. But...
We are slowly but surely turning into a police state (all over the country), and we're allowing it. :-(
