When I was driving home today myself and the guy next to me were both doing about 62 in a 50 mph zone and when we drove by the cop I saw him turn on his lights and I immediately pulled into the parking lot of the supermarket at the next turn and the cop went after the other guy, Is this kind of thing a good idea: Pulling into a public parking lot if possible when you might be pulled over, and in the event I am pulled over what should I say?
PS. If it isn't obvious I have never been pulled over before in my two years of driving.

It's not bad. That way, it gets both of you out of traffic. Just don't take too long in stopping, or you could get arrested for attempting to flee. |

You did right. Always try to pull over where it's safe for you and the cop so as to neither of you get run over. When your stopped don't get out of the car.
wait for the cop to get to your car before reaching for your wallet or hunting your insurance card. Keep your hands on the wheel in plan view, all this helps him or her from getting nervous. Remember, chances are they are as nervous as you are so help out by not talking alot. If, like in your case you know you were guilty so just wait for him to say what it is he's got to say, take your ticket and then go your way. This probably won't the first time you'll get stoped so just relaxe. By the way shopping centers or anywhere there might be witnesses is always good for both of you |

When you pull over, try to pull over some where safe away from traffic. Have engine off window down, reg card and insurance out. Trust me, the officer will respect your attentiveness! |

Yes, that's a good idea.
If it happens, roll down your window and then keep your hands on the steering wheel. The officer will approach and ask you for your insurance, registration and driver's license. Answer his or her questions and be cooperative. You should be fine. |
