Is this a poor police advice ?

Hello gentlemen,

I've been attacked yesterday, on the street, glad to say nothing bad happened, and while walking he did hold my arm and stop me.
I managed to push him away, lucky I was meters away from my home.

I called the police today asking what I am allowed and should do in a similar situation. All I was told was, get yourself free and call the police.
No mention about what I can do to improve my defending skills or anything else.

Poor police job ?

What exactly do you expect them to do or say. Give you a complete self defence course over the phone.
Get real, they gave you good advise.

and, someone holding your arm is not exactly an attack is it.

Jenn
Sounds like good advice to me.

The police can only tell you to flee the situation.
They are not allowed to tell you to defend yourself, because people will take it the wrong way and then tell the courts "the police told me to do it"
It's a liability issue

PRETTY GREEN EYES
police cannot tell more than that

be vigilant from now on - even more than before

make sure you hold your mobile phone in your pocket and dial 999 as soon asu see the B

so sorry this happened

the first answer is from a compkete waste of oxygen
pay no heed to his comment
he has no life

you could enrol in self defence classes

The law does not really allow you to fight an assailant unless there is no other option.

If you want to learn to fight, the police are not the people to teach you.

it is the right advise for your safety nowaday you can not confront anyone and you never know what will happen to you always run and call the police.

Try going to karate or some sort of self defence class. The police will probably not help you until it is too late. like saying "well call us when it is happening and we will help you". well by learning self defence you can lash out on anyone who is trying to attack you and you have some proof if you hurt them that it was self defence because you will be going to classes. Otherwise if you do anything to hurt an attacker and you don't have any witnesses or a class teacher to prove you do classes then the crime could get turned round on you and you will end up getting arrested for the violence. Typical of the police. Useless.

This all sounds rather feeble to me..... another 'catch out' question.

I wouldn't even waste my time posting this question, it's rather pathetic.

They can't tell you to fight back. If they tell you that and you get hurt, you can sue them. That's why they gave you the advice they did. If you don't feel comfortable anymore, take measures to protect yourself. Take a martial arts class, carry mace, get a concealed gun permit (if that is allowed where you live). Just be aware that what ever you decide to defend yourself, you are not immortal and if you choose to fight back you can still get hurt or possibly killed.

The police were not much help, were they!

You are legally allowed to use reasonable force to defend yourself, and if you use reasonable force then you can use the legal defence of self defence if necessaryl,

If there is an option of escaping without the use of force you must do this.
If you must use force, then you must only do enough to stop the attack and allow you to escape.

If you are attacked then you are allowed to push, hit, or otherwise strike your attacker, but but once you are able to escape you must do so. If you were to knock your attacker over then kick him in the head while he was lying on the ground, you would have gone over and above reasonable force, and you would have assaulted him.

I would recommend taking up a self defence class to boost your confidence and give yourself the tools to deal with such a situation if it ever occurs again.

Hope this explains things for you.

Why is this the responsibility of the police to tell you what you already know?
Everyone knows they have have a right to defend themselves so long as it is proportionate.
You have called the police because someone grabbed your arm, a perfect example of wasting police time.
I love the way you say you were "attacked", a bit melodramatic don't you think?
As for the advise given, what else are they supposed to tell you?
Victims of real crimes have every right to complain about a poor police response time, it usually because we are tied up doing petty crap like this!

Get over it.

EDIT*...Love the thumbs down.....if people cant handle the truth and continue to waste police time THEY are one of the reasons the country is going to the dogs!

andy b
as soon as they laid a hand on you it was common assault and you had the right to complain. the police have no right what so ever to tell you there is nothing that can be done it is there duty to collect evidence and forward it to the cps, if they fail to do this feel free to take up a prosecution against them for degradation of duty.

as for defending yourself if you are attacked you may use reasonable force, reasonable force is defined as what ever force is necessary to place them in a restrained position, in other words take them down as best you can then hold them for the cops DO NOT PUT THE BOOT IN that would be excessive.
Now then......... if they follow you into your house and attack you there the rules are different, after that farmer shot those thieving gypsy b*****ds the home office declared it is ok to kill an attacker in your home as long as your actions were instinctive and natural, not sure what that means but as an experienced martial artist all of my actions are now instinctive and natural, i do not know if the court would agree

I would say it defies description for any police officer to offer the advise you were offered which amounts to no more than a joke and sloppy this is just one of many reasons why the public no longer have any confidence in the police. If you are attacked in the street you are allowed to defend your self using reasonable force and as a citizen you expect when reporting the matter to the police to have it treated in a more professional and serious way, for all those who have said that being told to "get yourself free and call the police" is good advice lets hope it does not happen to you, what if the person is unable due to the strenght of the assailant or the person is invalid or a senior citizen. It is absolutely pathetic advise.

Lily B Talus
not really, ring again and ask if you can be seen by a family liaison officer who may be able to give you better advice, you probably didn't even speak to a police officer - just a civilian worker...and give Victim Support a call.

The drunk dude
you spoke with yet another crappy cop who is unwilling to investigate stuff/do his job.
