Is working for the police a good job? or are there lots of risks?

im only 15, but recently ive been looking in possible career options, ive always wanted to be in the police force, always watch those traffic cops programs and sometimes the bill! i think it will be so satisfying to arrest people not abiding the law. Are there many risks? Can someone with a fatigue illness(not a permanent illness) work for the police? thankyou, sorry if i sound silly.
Additional Details
sorry i meant is it really risky i know that there are risks, sorry again.

Being a police officer does have its risks, pretty much the risk of life endangerment is the same level between most countries due to laws and police powers. I see though you in the UK too.

Polices can and have got shot, a lot of cases do go unheard of, but police are shot at across the country. Not particulary firearms though, air rifles, paint guns and fireworks. All those can injure or kill. Paintball guns can take out an eye, which is fear of police officers as vision is a high requirement.
Air guns also can pierce skin in some areas. Again like the eye.
Fireworks, seen it on tv, youths threw lit fireworks at officers, though when i saw it they were in protected 4x4s. Still it happens. Even officers walking the beat can be attacked.

Risks also involving collisions of a car in blue lights hitting a other car, or crashing through barriers, like one incident in my hometown of officers crashing through a barrier into a river.
Also when attending to a car collision on a motorway can be dangerous, road workes get killed by being hit, also has happene to officers.

But let not any of this put you off, although its got its risks, it the job. Putting you life on the line to protect the community you live in. Decide wether if you feel that your willing to put your life on a higher tier. Its not incredibly dangerous though, as officer deaths are failry low, and sometimes caused without any care being taken in the situation.
The police is great job though, arresting people, I wouldn't say is fun, but satisfying, yet you may very well find it fun, some officers do, especially after being hit, not better revenge than getting them into a cell.

Since your 15, join the police cadets for your local force. Do it wil your 18, then hit the Special Constabulary, the specials are basically regular officers, althouhg unpaid and do their own desired hours. Yet its bestto start there. Joining the police at a young age, 18 or near is not too good for chances of getting in. Police look for people who have had life experience, basically dealing with people and certain situations.
22 upward, good age to start.

And the question about fatigue illness. It is possible for person to get in. However can affect the job they do, it will just be more difficult for the person, as police have to be alert and ready, dozing off while on duty is frowned upon or if you are just too tired to deal with a fight breaking out. If its fairly well treatable then police will accept it. You do get a medical test on entry into the police, although it wont simulate the effects of being out on patrol, it can test you to see if it has any deciding factor on your performance.

That depends on what you do for the police.

Not everyone is a street beat Cop. They have radio technicians, guards, and people who simply file and work with paperwork.

So it really depends on what you do and where your trying to go.

If you want to be a cop who patrols the street, yes there are allot of risks. Anytime you pull someone over it's possible it can go very wrong. It doesn't happen very often but it's something you have to consider every time.

Your best bet is to attend a job fair or get ahold of a recruiter. They can give you allot more information on jobs and training, etc.

Good luck.

My niece thought the police would be good after she left the army. Then she went on a short course and saw that it was not for her. You need to be really strong mentally. Thick-skinned and with lots of common sense.

By all means, pursue your interest, but do not ignore other options.

Even though I am upset at my current treatment
Man I tell ya we owe sooo much to our guys and gals that risk their lives each day for us, heck even the bad ones could end up taken a killing for us , they may take money here or this there, but watch if your life is in jeopardy.... they most of the time joined the force to save lives, and well watch.
I say Thank God for the ones willing to become an Officer of the Law.
Thanks Folks but lighten up a bit, I need a break as I am getting old !

im 16 and i would love to be a police man, and hopefully work my way up to homicide detective, i dont think it would be to dangerous as long as you are careful and always know your surroundings and follow protocol

Yes I would suggest you go and visit your Local Police station, and ask them questions about their jobs, and their families.
and if they will let you stay there during the night to observe what goes on, and let you listen in on the communications with the Officers that are out in the streets. That would answer your questions much better then I am able to. Risk yes.

It's law enforcement, honey! If you stay behind the desk, you'll be fine. If you plan to do otherwise,dummy-up,it's what we pay you to do. Put yourself where we don't want to,got it?
About the fatique, think of your partner, will you be a help or burden. I don't wish the horror stories on anyone, but it happens. you got time, think it over,it is a commitment.

Check into a police explorer program. You will get some training and a few ride alongs. For me the rewards far outweighed the risks. You've got to go into it for the right reasons. It is service, not a power trip. Does it feel good to get a drunk driver or some other low life off the street whose goal in life is to screw up some Innocent person's life? It's better than catching a 10 pound trout. Good luck.

Working as a police is a pretty good job, I mean, you meet different people everyday, you never get bored, you get paid pretty well, and you help people, and protect your community. Risks, heck yeah there are tons of risks, but every officer out there knows the risk when taking the job. Risks are, you could get shot, and killed. And the illness, well, it'll depend on the department, but as long as the illness doesn't prevent you from doing your job, then you're fine.Good luck

There are plenty of risks. But, there are also risks at every workplace. Some risks would be getting shot, killed, emotional (I.e. losing a partner, having to shot somebody, etc.), breaking a bone, etc. Plus, there is a slight risk of the suspect finding out where you live.

In Indiana, before you become a police officer, you have to go through a lot of tests. One being a physical test. If I remember correctly, you have to do 24 sit-ups in one min., be able to jump vertically of 13.5 inches, do max push-ups of 21, 300 meter run in 82 seconds, and 1.5 mile run in 18 mins. 52 secs.

There is also classes for defense etc. So, if you are able to do the basic requirements, I do not see there being a problem once you become a police officer.

At your age, you may want to see if your state offers cadet summer camp or classes. Even if you do not want to become a police officer, there are plenty of jobs that you can do at the police station. I also suggest going to college to obtain a BA in Criminal Justice.

Good luck!

If the police ever have a strike then complete pandemonium breaks out. There is just endless looting and crime and society starts falling apart. The police protect us so much. It is hard to know this because we never see what it would be like without them. Is it a good job? *yes*

It's fun stuff.
