Is writing threatening e-mails a crime?

Write to the hosts of the different e-mail addresses, forwarding the e-mails, so that they can deal with the accounts of the person(s) sending you these e-mails. You might also call your police, if you're really scared, and ask them what your options are. It becomes hazy because with e-mail, it's difficult to determine jurisdiction... but that said, threatening e-mails ARE illegal.

any type of threat on ones life is a crime be it face to face....phone...mail or email.....save them in the in box then let the police know....somebody from the computer crime department should be able to help

Yes, it is a crime. Contact the police department immediately. Optionally, you can also file a complaint with FTC, but see what the police say first.

I'm not exactly sure if they can be considered crimes, although I believe "uttering" is a crime...however, make sure you save and document all of these e-mails because they would be evidence in case you wanted to obtain a restraining order against the sender.

If you owe the money, pay it and keep the emails as evidence of a crime. Then you can sue them and get the money back.

Print them out and take them to the police so you have at least started a file. Ask them what you can do from that point and never hesitate to ask any questions or report anything and everything. The police can also research from what computer it is coming from by looking at the IP Address from the emails.

Save them all, document everything, and call the police...non-emergency line please. Threats are threats, no matter how you get them.

take it to the police right away.and if you dont want to receive anymore threatening emails block them and report them as spam.

If the threats put you in fear, that is, you have a reasonable expectation that the sender of the emails will make good his/her threat, it's possible that the emails themselves constitute assault.

Yes, threatening emails are a crime. Print out any threats and take such to your local police. Should your local police choose not to act upon such threats, contact your state Attorney General. Should your state Attorney General choose not to act, contact the FBI office in your state--every state has an FBI office. Should the FBI choose not to act, take your evidence to the local and state media--tv, radio. Unless you are a "recognized kook", someone will listen to you.

Not if you are sending the email to yourself. I've sent threatening emails to myself and the police refuse to do anything about it.
