Isn't it about time America banned guns?

The law of averages in a large population means that someone sometime is going to get killed. Additional Details An automobile is a means of transport , yeah people get killed, a tin opener could kill in the wrong hands. A gun has only one purpose, to kill or injure. Life is a bit different these days to the fronteer days so what if it was law 100 years ago, things move on. Criminals will undoubtedly hang on to their guns, but if it was 10 years in jail for posessing a gun even they would think twice. You have to start somewhere.

More should be done to get guns out of the hands of criminals,I fully support that. |

Um, did you happen to see the Supreme Court decision recently regarding gun rights? I think your view is inconsistent with that, and their decision is what counts.
The law of averages also would say that if we banned guns, only criminals would have guns, and someone, sometime, would be victimized by being robbed, kidnapped, shot, etc. and get away with it because no one can stop them. After all, no one would have a gun to shoot back at the criminal. Average that in. :-) |

Criminals will keep their guns.
But if citizens don't have guns.....how can they protect themselves from criminals who want to hurt them?
I neither hate nor love police in general, but the hard fact is that they can't be everywhere at the same time.
I pray to God everyday that gun-owners never have to fire their pieces, but I'd rather them have them, and not need them, than need them and not have them.
Guns cause crimes like flies cause garbage.
Ten out of ten people die. |

Ban cars too. They kill way more folks than guns do.
I guess we should add trains to that list as well.
And alcohol.
and big macs
The list could be endless................. |

Yeah, let's follow you... ban guns and allow Sharia Law to be used in our courts while our nanny state rocks us to sleep every night.
Stalin & Hitler were also rather anti gun ownership.
I do not own a gun, but I live in a place where I can go to sleep in my own backyard and leave my doors/windows unlocked in my house & car without being robbed.
I am also not naive enough to believe that gun crime would decrease if legal firearms are banned. I'm not the type of person who assumes that criminals like to follow laws. Isn't that the reason why they are criminals in the first place... because they are lawless? What difference does it make to them if owning a gun is illegal or not?
Accidental injuries & deaths related to firearms might decrease, but certainly not crime. It would just make criminals more fearless & law-abiding citizens more gutless & powerless.
Have you even checked the gun crime rates in your own country, and how much they are increasing, despite guns being illegal? It's time to stop with the "guns iz ebil" propaganda and face the fact that a gun is an object & nothing more. |

The Constitution allows us this right. If they were to ban guns, only the criminals would have them. The UK is supposed to have a ban on guns but you see in the news all the time about someone getting shot. What good has this done you? Thanks but no thanks..I'd rather keep all my freedoms in tact. |
|

Westward Wind

Sure. Let's just rip that whole 2nd Amendment right out of the Constitution.
Have you hugged your tree today?
People like you scare me. The fact that you're probably a registered voter scares me even more... |

What other defense against the threat of domestic tyranny do people have? Legalize private ownership of armed blackhawks, tanks, and missile batteries and then yes I will give you my handgun and rifle. Something for something.
Crime is the secondary reason for gun ownership. Crime can be avoided with awareness and "hardened targets" but if tyranny comes knocking then it is submit or die time. |

Before there were guns, murder still existed. Believe it or not, there are many many gun owners that carry their guns who are law abiding citizens. Look at the areas with the most gun control and you will find some of these places to have the most violent crime.
I don't believe in murder. I do believe in protection and safety. I know...I know, let the government take care of us so we don't have to. The government cannot always be there to bail you out in the instant you rights become violated. If it were, I am not sure that is the America we want to live in. Wake up!!! |

John ..couldn't vote for you ... with your logic you would be a danger to the sovereignty of your country ... you would enact useless legislation that would harm your citizenry ...
You are totally misinformed and have used poor logic to justify banning guns .... |
|

sparhawk7322
|
You have never tried using logic before have you? Banning guns means that only criminals will have them. Look at England, guns have been banned there for years yet they still have gun crime. What else do you want banned? Cars, peanuts, or any of the thousands of things that kill people every day? |

Mark Twain said that there are three kinds of lies. There are:
Lies
Damned Lies, and
Statistics.
The law of averages is a poor rationale to pass laws. There are as many cars in America as there are guns, yet people are killed by cars at 5 times the rate of guns. By the law of averages, fully 100% of people who are living will die from doing so. Therefore, life should be outlawed.
There are roughly 16,000 murders each year in the U.S. There are roughly 10,000 handgun deaths each year, of which many are accidental. Actual murder by handguns is substantially less than 10,000. Less than half of all murders are committed with guns, so there will still be killing even when guns are banned.
When you consider all the deaths by unnatural causes (including accidents, negligence, etc), guns account for a tiny percentage of them. Bannning guns will not have much of any impact on people being killed as a population. |

The law of averages (or is it the law of nature) states that everyone sometime is going to die, it's just a question of how soon and what illness or act of stupidity will take them. Even those who espouse the eradication of one of our most sacred laws: the right to keep and bear arms. |

Lots of countries have guns, they just don't go around killing each other with them all the time. In my opinion, the problem is that these days too many kids are either being raised by strangers while their parents work or they are raise themselves whilst their parents are off getting drunk or high. Either way you are left with angry confused kids who become angry confused adults and thats a recipe for disaster. I don't believe banning guns would do anything to help the situation because of the sheer amount of weapons in the US. They would still be got very easily on the black market if you decided you didnt like your classmates anymore. |

If we ban guns, how will we shoot the liberals? |
|

El Scott
|
No. If you pass a law banning guns then the only people that will follow it will be non-criminals. So you will have a nice unarmed law abiding population with a well armed criminal element. Criminals do prefer unarmed victims.
I have owned a gun since I was a little kid and have never committed a violent act with a firearm. It's not the guns, its the people that break the law.
Gun control is stupid and does not work. Locking up the violent people is what we need to do. |
|

NSA

No, it is not time that we ban our right to self defense.
We use our firearms for defense, hunting, and sport shooting.
The criminals don't care if they can legally buy firearms or not. They will still get fire arms.
It is illegal to murder - it happens everyday all over the world.
Rape is illegal - it happens everyday all over the world.
Robbery, home invasion/burglary are illegal - happens everyday all over the world.
Child molesting is illegal - it happens everyday all over the world.
Passing a law does not prevent a crime. Criminals commit crimes. By equipping the average citizen with the means to prevent, or stop crimes, the job of the criminal becomes harder.
The UK has very oppressive gun control laws, and gun crime and knife crime.
My neighbourhood has a large number of gun owners. We are very open about it. We also have no violent crime. The neighbouring neighbourhoods enjoy the safety provided by our neighbourhood. When the police come through, they smile and wave. We are not a danger to law abiding citizens. Criminals are not welcome. |

I am in UK.
We don't regularly own guns - although we can by applying for a gun licence.
Our gun crime is much lower than US - despite some replies you have had.
Personally I think the practice of gun ownership is so embedded in American society that you have passed the point of change.
You have a different history to UK - started from a different position - and progressed in a different direction - with different dangers.
You have what you have.
You can try and modify what you have.
But I don't think you can go back. |

No, I think we need to re-instate the 1994 ban on bayonet lugs, high cap magazines, and threaded barrels…This way there will no longer be any bayonet related deaths, criminals will have to carry 3 magazines to make up for the one 30 rd magazine, and they will no longer be able to take the flash suppresser off the end of their gun and throw it at you…yes it’s a sarcastic answer but when it comes to gun laws and bans politicians are so far off on the real issues related to gun control it’s makes me sick. |

You mean ban weapons,if they stop using guns they will use something else ,probably more efficient and productive ,like locally made bombs ,,which are so easy to make that i dont know why people use guns, with a bomb you can kill everyone in the vicinity and not even be there to do it.Once this occurs to those who lean that way you will have chaos.Leave things as they are,we have always killed each other, mainly in the name of nationalism, greed or religion, and this will never change, its the world wide sport of the human race--destroy and kill,we are never out of the news with death on a wide scale. |

YES! You would not believe how many homicides/murders/gang related shootings, etc would decrease because of it. I mean do you think the Founding fathers depicted gang members shooting random people out of the blue back in the 1700's? |

No thanks, I'd rather have my freedom. The right to bear arms is a major part of America. If you don't value that freedom, move to the UK. They are willing to give up their rights because of criminals over there.
If anything, if more DECENT people had guns here less people would get killed, particularly in office/work shootings and random shootings.
Banning anything means only the criminals have it. Last I checked, crack is also illegal but you can drive down an inner city street and buy it..
Getting rid of guns just escalates bludgeoning deaths and knifings, I'd rather get shot then beat to death with a baseball bat. Oh, unless you plan on banning those to? Cars still kill more people, will you ban those too?
Edited to add: You said "tin" opener. We call them cans here. I'm guessing you're a European that thinks the rest of the world should do things your way? How about you guys do your thing, we do our thing.. |
