We should make the prisons less comfortable which would in the long run reduce the overall crime rate because then the inmates would want to get out and stay out. If there is a shortage of cells, ship in camp beds and increase one extra inmate to each already occupied cell. Why should convicted villains have the provision Newspapers, telephone facilities, workout gyms etc, good regular meals, the best medical attention etc etc. Apparently obtaining drugs is no real problem, put a stop to that and they would soon have to face reality and wish they were free. They already get a reduction in the Sentence for good behaviour ! Take away the lax prison system and do-gooders and make them earn any privileges like an occasional community view of the television but definitely NO newspapers. The prison population would in time have reduced numbers of repeat offenders.

spend more money on schools and you will need to spend less on jails

zeldieuk2002
prisons are full of petty criminals, ie bill dodgers, so the real criminals get away knowing they will get a fine as the prisons are full, knowing that they will get away with paying something like £2 a week as they have no income! god old british justice for you

That's nothing new.. Been over crowding, early releases as long as I can remember.. 40+ years. I think who goes to jail and for how long is the problem.. Ya.. right.. keep that 'ol pot smoker in there for 10 years.. Let the child molester out due to over crowding.. Our priorities are off..

jails are full of the wrong people? if drinking was banned as well as smoking in public places would the percentage be the same or less. There are more drunks than smokers. Lets save jails for buglers, rapists drunks and murderers. Oh sorry Inland revenue where do you get your most income from these days.

Yep, unfortunately, this country has become prison happy.
It's disturbing.

I live in Champaign county and the jails are overcrowded here. In fact, we have had numerous complaints from the prisoners about the conditions of the jail ex: not enough places to sit or stand, not being provided with a place to lay down at night, no cover or pillow, running out of food (supplied by the county nursing home). We have had at least four deaths of prisoners and complaints of inmates recieving proper medical care in a timely manner.

I can say that I can attest to a few of these incidents myself . I myself have been arrested for non payment of a bill and seen the inside of the holding cells. Many of the women I was in the cell with were all University of Illinois or Parkland College students arrested for non violent moving traffic violations. Some of the women were drug users arrested for petty crimes and had been in the holding tank for 30-60 days b/c there was no space for long term female prisoners (many of these women had the same clothes on they were arrested in months ago, they were not able to bail out b/c of unusually high bonds or the back up of the court system even though they were seen via satalliet by the judges.

I work in a ER and the local police frequently bring in inmates and we get the scoop on why they are there in the ER and the police thoughts and problems that arise for them having to bring an inmate in. Just this past week and inmate was brought in three times in two days. Why? The police were short staff so they had to return after not being able to stay more than a couple of hrs to guard the inmate (who happened to be there on warrant for failure to appear for child support). The county has a nurse onsite but i am sure his problem had to be something that had to be evaluated by a MD. If so why wait so long?

Lastly, the deaths in the jail should be a sign that something is wrong. One of the persons who died on May 27th was the cousin of my boyfriend. There is currently an inquest going on to determine that his death was brought on or neglect of the Champaign County police. Quentin Larry was his name and after being arrested and spending 24 hours in the jail on a domestic disturbance call he suffered a heart attack and died. They did not notify the family in a timely manner (which they had phone numbers to do so) unitl after his death. Quentin was no saint and this is the reason many beleive that he is being denied justice after death.

This has been a hot topic in my community if you want to read mor about it go to out local paper and use the search box to read about the hx of this ongoing problem. The News Gazette is the local news paper here. The jail is located on Urbana, Illinois..... the county is Champaign.

Yeah jails are full...which is why a lot of people get very lenient sentences for serious crimes...there is just not enough room to keep them all in there. That's why probation is being utilized more often; it keeps people out of jail, but they're still being "supervised". Its a cycle though, its the same people coming in and out of the jails and prisons, its sad really.

As for the comment about making jails less comfortable: its obvious you've never set foot inside some of these prisons; its rough in there. It smells like armpits and simple green (the cheap cleaning product used in most jails), and its dangerous. Nobody wants to be there for real for real. Some federal prisons are nice, but please go and visits a local/county/state jail, and you will soon find out what kind of a s%*$# hole jail is! I go to prisons quite often for parole revocation hearings, and I've been to quite a few jails just for tours and what not...trust me, it ain't pretty!

Oh and good luck trying to clean up the prison system...you've got convicted felons + underpaid staff + visitors smuggling in contraband...I like how you've solved all of the problems in corrections with one post! You're a freakin' genius! Don't you think people have thought of trying to fix this before?

balmung2@verizon.net
They could always stop aresting people for stupid crap like not having enough money for insurance but still having to drive to work cause that is the only way to get there..... and other stupid stuff....

The news today is that the government want a prison ship! I believe it would only be a good idea if it was used to jail the illegal imigrant prisoners and when it was full, it set sail and took them home! That would 'kill 2 birds with one stone' or is that solution too simple for this government to work out!

the court system and beat cops are set up to keep peace plus make money for the city and state, among fines for petty offenses and governing law there is no fine line, my suggestion would be for repeat and serious crimes jail them if not probation just pulls more money and sets the stage for other charges, repeat offenders should not be released and serious offenders terminated. zero tolerance works ask other countries.

Okay this is what we need to do. Take all the prisoners, put them into the Army, first let them train in boot camp. Than give m uniforms and than let them fight the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and let our soldiers come home

jails full pah, put them 2,3,4,5,6,7, to a cell who cares scum b*****ds, you cant put them in the army they would steal it.

er so what... well for starters your taxes will rise to pay for it. it cost more to keep a convict in a cell than it does to keep my nan in hospital... (last weeks guardian) theres two options, either we stop jailing all and sundry...or we find an alternative...like good old fashoined hard labour in the community...theres a whole raft of places that coul duse some renovation... if a 14yr old can kill you with a gun as easily as a 45yr old, then he can weild a paintbrush just as easily. and be properly supervised. Tags GPS and a control van.

its either that, or we let the military control the prisons, and create penal battalions... don't you think the falklands would make a great "training camp" no escaping from there...its aalready got a garrison, and an airstrip capable of taking army transports...

building more prisons is not teh answer... too often its no better than a tick box exercise. kids are out of control because teh government has taken away any control... like parents and teachers, and the nanny state must replace those controls and disciplines, before it gets any worse.

we are at war. bring back military training. make a reserve army of willing, and not so willing conscripts... charlie may already be in the wire, and should the sneaky little fork get thru, it'd be nice to know we have a planned response. and we dont just make it up as we go along.. the golden days of empire are gone, we fight for our survival, on a world stage.

make the offer, hard time or national service. i'd bet the prisons would empty, adn the ranks fill... oohhh the namby pambies cry..youll be giving guns to convicted prisoners... youll be teaching them to kill.. yes lady, its whats going to keep you safe in bed at night. the training we give our squaddies is second to none.. it has to be... they learn discipline..and to think for themselves..war is a great team building exercise...

for England and St George may sound like gingoistic mumbo jumbo... thankfully millions of us believe it. it has nothing to do with racism, its about our country. this green and sceptered isle..

we lead, we are not led. we make policy and execute it, we do not dance to another mans tune. and all we have to do is out our X in someone elses box... thats democracy for you.. we, the people hold the power, we put governments in, and we can send them packing...

we have this incredible power as individuals, granted to us by king John on his return from the crusades.. in 1215 at runnymeade he signed the Magna Carta. and we had rights... protected by the crown.

and were throwing it all away... may our grandchildren forgive us.

true, all prisons are full of 'non british persons', move them out and your looking at about 68% drop , don't blame me I didn't vote labour !!!
