I also had such a robe......Lol! I was an usher, no pockets in mine, but I do believe you are correct! I'd agree ' in the pocket' maybe a 'backhander'

The idea of the pocket in barristers' robes was that clients would pay fees by dropping money in there as the barrister was forbidden from asking for money.

Not sure about the saying, I wonder if it is something to do with the saying that "X is in Y's pocket", though on reflection that's probably the wrong way round . . .
