I think that if an individual wants to attempt to rescue a small child from a burning building - that is their right or choice. Can you really stop them?

This disgusts me. The Brits have become a bunch of pansies. You're not allowed to defend yourself against a criminal who's attacking or robbing you (YOU could be charged!) And now they have police preventing brave citizens from trying to rescue a family from a burning building. It's pathetic! |

Police's job is "public safety", and that includes stopping people from suicidal runs, no matter their good intentions.
If they had NOT stopped the neighbors and someone died in addition to the dead family, they'd be sued for negligence or something equally baloney.

It is difficult to answer without being there to observe the severity of the fire, but yes, I would probably stop them. And yes, legally I could detain them for their own safety. It is called "protective custody".
Fires are dangerous enough when you wear protective equipment. Allowing someone else to enter only increases the chance they will both die. |

I think the Police officers have had the training and knowledge to understand that this kind of undertaking, no matter how noble, might result in more dead bodies.
Legally speaking, they probably can't stop you, but there's no time to debate that issue so they do the best they can to save a life. (Yours)
