I am currently on probation in Columbus Ohio for disorderly conduct. I have complete all requirements: Court Costs, Restitution, Parenting Class, etc... except for 1. My PO wants me to do a 40 WEEK ($25 per session = $1000) Anger management course. Based on a general assessment by a social worker. I have no history of anger management & was just place in the class. I have a year left of 2 year probation. PO is very uncooperative. I have only a 29 day sentence if I violate which I prefer over 40 weeks of a class that I don't need. I am contacting an actual licensed psychologist for a 2nd opinion. I would rather due the 29 days than 40 weeks but can I negotiate with the judge to do weekends or community service instead. I don't want to loose my job. But I am sick of this case and I have given more than enough for a misdemeanor charge. Not giving 40wks (almost a year) and $100 for a 30 day misdemeanor. My nieghbor rcvd 29 wks for anger management for writing a bad check a totally non violent charge. It is just a cash cow here, not a real reason to send someone to the class. I would understand if I had a record of violence. Anyone have any ideas???? Only serious answers please.

You are currently on probation for disorderly conduct.
Your probation officer (wants, recommends, demands) I do not care what the probation officer wants, it should have been stated in the original order what was to be done, if not, can the PO legally order you to attend or do anything they want you to do while under their control (NO THEY CANNOT)
Hire an attorney or see one about advice on your order from the court. |

I would suggest speaking with your lawyer, if you have one. It seems like overkill for the parole officer to make you do a 40 week anger management course.
However, if the judge ordered you to take anger management, then you really do have no choice: it's either take the course, or go to jail. If the judge did not order you to take anger management, then I'm fairly certain the probation officer can't make you do it.
After you receive the written report from the psychologist, and speak with a lawyer, I would speak with your probation officer at your next meeting in a calm, non-confrontative way (which shows you don't need anger management), and talk about why you feel you have no need to take this course.

More than likely the reason for the anger management classes is the disorderly conduct charge. You could hire an attorney, but I don't think it's going to benefit you. You might just consider doing the 20 or 30 days and have it over with! It's certainly a hell of a lot cheaper than the 40 week course on anger management. Perhaps you could get a 30 day leave of absence from your workplace to save your job. |
