I think they are doing alright, however they can't stop all the crime in the world.

About a half hour ago, my grandson just came to see me on a visit from College where he attends school in Ohio. He had barely got out the car, when the police stopped him and questioned him about where he was going and why.

He just told me he could not wait to get back to Central and away from Chicago, and I don't blame him. All he was doing was getting out of the car to come into my house, so what is all this s--- about you tell me!

They arent doing jack. And its not just the police thats messed up either. Its the government altogether. You know they're being bought out by the gas and oil companies. Thats why they never find anything when they 'investigate' the rising gas prices. I could go into the government so badly, but I think I'll just write an article to the newspaper.

The trouble with the whole thing is that is has become a business...A BIG BUSINESS!!!

They are not Protecting or Defending anyone!!
BUT they are all over it if there is a profit in it...
Speeding tickets, no insurance tickets, illegal seizing of private properties under the disguise of a "drug war"....That's where the money is....

I think they are doing a good job. There are a few bad cops out there, that give the rest a bad name, but on the whole they are doing a good job in a very tough situation.

I have another example for you...My car was hit one night in my apartment complex parking lot. The damage which was done to my car matched my neighbors cars damage exactly "to me." My car is blue and theirs was red. I had red on mine where there was damage and theirs had blue. Their car was parked next to mine. I also found pieces of their car all around and even on my tire which matched missing pieces of their car. I called my local police station where they told me I can't prove anything....I listened to their reasons which made no sense to me and also sounded like they didn't want to do any paperwork. The driver of the other car also doesn't have a license, but was dating a cute lady who was a friend of one of the cops on the small police force. When I repeatedly asked how I do not have a case and why they wouldn't file a police report on it I got different reasons for it. I then started asking questions and they called 2 more squads (which is probably every car they have) to come tell me I was out of line and should drop it. I then got angry and called the cops useless and worthless and told them to leave before I got pissed off. They gave me attitude and left.

BTW I am 23 and the other man was about 35.

I think 75 % of people in the world are half retarded, cops are no exception.

the light things should be let go like you said a broken light yet someone needed help over a break down thought they were their to protect the danger their is that another might not notice the stopped auto and run into it.

Power currupts. I think we are better off today than we were in most eras in the past, because we have checks and balances in place. We have video taping, and access to information that can surface info that never would have come to light, nevermind be documented or even put on the web or in the news! There is power in the hands of people in this country (USA), and many places in the free world. Unfortunately I think that which has made us great has been compromised with leadership in the current administration, but I do think they believe they are acting appropriately. I hope that power continues to slide back into the hands of the people, and we continue to keep an active role in law enforcement and the legal system as a whole. The legal system isn't perfect, but it is pretty amazing how enduring and flexible it is.

Police work is changing with the times as everything does. Police officers are expected to do much more these days. For example the speeding issue...it's a fact that speeding leads to higher fatality rates in accidents. If Police can slow everyone down then maybe less fatality accidents. Drug arrests also help the community in ways you may never know unless you have a family member or friend strung out on drugs and you watch them ruin their lives because of the drugs. Police officers also patrol to help deter thieves which is good for the community because no one wants the stuff they've worked hard for disappear in the middle of the night just to support someone's drug habit.

Someone who's broken down needs a tow truck, not a police car. That's why response times are so high, because police are being asked to perfom tasks they have no business being called for.

I think our law enforcement officers are spread much too thin, meaning there just aren't enough of them to go around. They are fighting the never ending battle against drugs, spousal abuse, child abuse, etc. The good old days of the beat cop (a police officer that walked around your neighborhood) are long gone. With that went the cop kicking the neighborhood bully in the pants and making him behave, helping Mr. Smith home from the bar after he had too much to drink, keeping an eye on the widow and her small children, etc. Our police officers no longer know the people they are being paid to protect, unless they patrol a very small town. That being said, the crimes that the police deal with are much more serious than they used to be. The criminals are usually better armed than the cops and the assault or shooting of a police officer is not frowned on as much as it used to be. My parents remember a time when the beat cop walked past the house and you respected him and called him sir; today people look at the police with disdain, spit on them and call them pig. People have to remember that the police are the enforcers of the laws that are passed by our leaders in the government. You can bet that they don't like some of those laws that they have to enforce and think them stupid, idiotic and just plain a waste of their time. But, they have to enforce those laws that are on the books, like it or not. They don't make up the laws, they just enforce those that are enacted. If it is felt that they are slacking in their duties, it is because they just can't keep up anymore. If you were to check with your local police department, I bet you would find that they do not have as many police officers on the force as they used to. Police and Fire Departments are very expensive for cities, countys, and states to run. They are up and running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with no time off for holidays. Their equipment is used the same amount of time and thus wears out quicker. Because of this, city, countys and states usually cut the funding to those departments first.

As you can probably guess, I am very pro police as my father and husband were both police officers. I also worked for our local police department and then the district attorneys office for over 26 years. I am 51 years of age. Its easy for people to sit back and criticize the police and say that they are not doing their jobs or are not good role models. But, walk in their shoes for a 12 hour shift responding to family fights, drunken brawls, fatal car crashes, robberies, shootings, rapes, child abuse, etc. and then tell me that they are slacking. Then after they do arrest the bad guys, to go to court and watch the Judge slap the criminals on the hands and tell them to be good little girls and boys and send them out onto the street to victimize again. Or the judge throw a hard fought case out of court completely because of a minor technicality; a search that has been deemed inproper, an interview that was not conduct properly, or a key piece of evidence thrown out because it may not have been properly obtained.

LET'S DO SAY RIGHT FROM THE START THAT THERE ARE SOME VERY GOOD COPS OUT THERE.

But, you do have the ones that are no good. A cop pulling someone over for a broken tail light. That is a cop doing what his boss says to do. We got quota. You got expenses in that car you drive to pay for and if you want a pay check, get r done.

41 yr old male. police are necessary in society and are under more scrutiny now than before it is undergoing change due to terrorist threats and there fore we must support them to the extent the earn the right to converse.ie if they are polite be polite also if they are rude be polite but say little.if you want to be free of fear of police get a lawyer and form a company so you are a company director then you will have status under law.

police exist to protect the citizens

most of what they do (issuing tickets, chasing off homeless people) is pretty much arbitrary and ineffective

but they still perform a core function in minimizing dangerous crime.

it is up to citizens (i.e. you and me) to monitor police behavior and stand up when we witness injustices. that means questioning and petitioning against laws and regulations that we think are unfair

I finally got tired of being profiled by cops and treated like low-life from the projects because I look Hispanic. I am an educated, professional woman with more degrees than the boys who can't score a high IQ to be accepted into police academy.

I did it one night, it worked, so now I'll keep doing it: The moment a boy downtalked to me out of the blue, I pulled my cell phone and videotaped the interaction. Only to witness a sudden turn around in his attitute. But it was nice to recover control and get the big boy to treat me with decency.

Hope he keeps the possibility of being on tape fresh in his mind, from that night on. You know, all they say about women empowering themselves in their 40s is sooo true!

I live in a large city and think the police are doing a great job.
Do I agree with them? Huh? So far, I've agreed with them in what they've said to me... when something was said to me at all... like, "you were speeding." Yup, I agreed. I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for with that question...

Are they doing their job? Yes and then some. Are they slacking? Not from my viewpoint...

I don't need to provide a story to "defend" my answers. They do their jobs and I do mine. I don't really have that much contact with the police, but their high visibility is muchly appreciated by me. 'Specially where I live and frequently have to come home from work late at night or wee a.m.

Once when I was in New York, as the subway train I was on was pulling away, I saw a cop arresting some guy. I have no idea why. I have no idea how much crime was also going on at the time. I have no idea what ever became of the whole incident. I saw a piece of life in a moment of time... just like you when you saw a cop "pulling someone over for a broken taillight."

Since it's illegal to drive with a broken taillight - and dangerous, as well - the cop did that motorist a favor by calling that to his attention. I've been pulled over for the same thing... I was not ticketed, just made aware of the fact that my taillight needed replacing.
