My Dad (who's 71) got arrested on Fri night for cycling with no lights. What about the real criminals?

Where is this? At most riding a bike at night is at most a small ticket, you donâ€™t get arrested for that! No really! So did he have an outstanding arrest warrant, did he forget to pay some traffic tickets, or child support, or something else?

There has too be something elseâ€¦â€¦â€¦.. At least in the US.

It is a Feckng Disgrace!! Poor man...Go to a Solicitor and get Legal aid if this goes on. Your dad will get off with it. This makes me sooo annoyed, he didn't do no harm.

I'm not sure where you are (Great Britain?), but here in America the police force is used to intimidate people and keep the proletariat (and the bourgeoisie) "in line." They SAY they're here to protect us, but it's just not true. They protect the interests of the moneyed upper class, but as far as they're concerned, the rest of us can go to hell. We have one of the largest prison populations in the world. Police are useless for most of the population here; I don't know about where you are, but maybe it's the same situation.

I agree with you totally1 Cops need to be worried about murderers and rapist. But no they care about underage drinking, marijuana possession, and traffic violations. You know why? One reason money!!!!!

Have you ever had to respond to a dead cyclist that got hit by a car because the driver couldn't see a bike without lights? I have. The officer saw a violation of the law and acted on it.

Added: I.P. Freely needs to check his facts. There is NO law requiring a female officer to be present when females are searched.

They took him to jail but I guarantee you it was for public intoxication.

If he had been run over and killed, you would still call us inadequate, cowardly and ineffectual. Then you would have blamed us for not doing something about it and sued. We can't win, can we?

It is really for his own safety. The government can yell and shout, but sometimes people don't get the message until they get arrested. You should be thankful that they saw him before he had an accident, and they responded in a way that drives the message in his head so he won't do it again. You never know what could have happened.

And police officers responding to minor things like this have no problem leaving the scene abruptly if called for a more serious incident.

this is what is wrong with the world...you dad may have endangered his safety and broke a rule by having no lights...BUT SO WHAT!!! i say just leave the poor old guy alone. what ever happened to the day when one could get a warning? it's not like your dad was out looting!!! something similar happened to my daughter. she was walking home from the local bar...WALKING...NOT DRIVING. the mayberry police "pulled" her over with lights and sirens...seriously. now if they were genuinely concerned about her safety...that would be different. we live in a small town and they know her...she has no record...we all know each other. after the BS lights and sirens deal...they searched her. she didn' t know better and let them. they found nothing. what angered me is that there was no female officer present...THAT IS ILLEGAL! they had no probable cause to do this...this was harassment...a cop harassing a pretty young lady. i agree with you 100%. i went down to the police station and voiced my complaint...of course they denied it. i think even if nothing comes of it...you should say something. maybe something like..."what is the problem you have with my dad? he is just an old guy trying to enjoy what ever time he has without being hassled. "
