I'll start by saying that I live in the state of Pennsylvania.
In January 2008, the mother whom I had been estranged from passed away. Just today, I received a call from the lady whom I had never met before my mother's passing called me threatening legal action if I do not pay rent that my mother was not paying and for damages my mother's dog had done to the apartment.
I was not associating with my mother other than through a phone call once a month at the time she met this landlady and moved in. I was not used as a reference, never signed anything for my mother, never visited this apartment until after she passed away, and never spoke to this landlady before.
What legal right does she have to come after me for back-rent or damages to her property when I had nothing at all to do with her renting to my mother? As far as I always believed, this was the reason you get deposits and pet deposits from your renters, to cover instances like this. To the best of my knowledge, she never asked for, nor collected, any such deposits from my mother.
I have obviously not seen any copy of any contracts she and my mother may have signed.
At the time of her passing, my mother owned no property and had no savings and had no insurance. I received nothing from her in her passing.

Did your mother leave a will? If she did, whoever she designated as executor or executrix is responsible; not you.
If she didn't, it will be up to the Court to determine who will administrate the estate. You are under no obligation to accept such a responsibility.
That landlady has a right to collect any money owed to her by your mother by filing a claim against the estate. She has NO right, however, to insist you pay if the court does not recognize you as administrator or executor. |

You are in no way, shape or form responsible for your mother's back rent and damages to her apartment. You weren't on the lease...end of story.
She can threaten legal action all she wants to. No attorney is going to take this case, and no court has the legal ability nor the desire to waste time/money on a baseless case like this. |

The first answer in the string of answers is correct, unless you are designated as the custodian of her estate, there is no legal recourse the landlord can use against you. She most likely found out about you from the lease agreement your Mother filled out with the management company for next of kin. This however, is for emergency contact or used if the renter disappears. The landlord is stuck with this delima on her own. She will next seize the apartments contents if she files a lean on them. This will be where your state laws come into play on civil law. Unless you plan on obtaining her personal things, you really don't have any legal worries. |

It's kind of hard to answer this because laws vary from state to state, but I think I can be reasonably certain that if you signed nothing and are not her legal guardian/executor of her estate, then you're not liable for anything. You need to seek professional legal council, but I'm pretty sure you haven't a thing to worry about. |

She doesn't have a leg to stand on.
She could sue your mother's estate, but since she had nothing, the landlord would get nothing.
In a civil suit, the plaintiff has to prove the defendant (you) are responsible for the damages and monies owed.
She can't do that.
