My laptop was stolen last year. Its been recovered and I want it back. How do I get my property returned?

I've spoken to the investigating officer and the forensics officer. If they can take photos of the laptop, the serial number, and copy my hard drive, how long can they keep it at this point? I've emailed the officer and told him I would drop the prosecution of theft if that was what I needed to do to get it back. Initially they told me my laptop was destroyed. Then 6 months later they call to tell me its been recovered. How long do they have the right to hold it? I work from home on my computer and purchased it last summer to replace the one I'm currently using. This one died yesterday. I recovered it, but its older and not able to handle my editing applications as the laptop was intended to do. Do the police have an obligation to return my property if I'm requesting it?

They can hold evidence until the case is over. But maybe if you talk nice to the prosecutor they would be willing to return it.

You've spoken with two officers and emailed. Your laptop can easily be returned to you by completing a photo affidavit( for trial) and taking a photo. It's time to speak with a supervisor. Advise that you will be at the evidence custodian's office with your Photo ID to pick it up. There's no reason to hold your property.
