My mom's bike was stolen many years ago... NOW IT'S ON EBAY!!?

Is there ANYTHING I can do to get it back other than bid on it?! I wonder if it's the thief who is selling it!

I know it's hers because first of all, it's in Boca Raton -- no more than 15 miles from where it was stolen -- second, there are hardly ANY bikes like that one out there, and lastly, she had replaced the clip style pedals with regular ones -- just like the ones on it in the auction. My mother loved that bicycle. She has since partially lost her sight due to a genetic condition and cannot drive, so she rides a bike everywhere. I would give anything to get it back for her but I don't want to give a thief my money.

I'm going to ask her if she still has the serial # for the frame somewhere. Good idea!

Well if u have any proof that this bike belongs to ur mother then u can go to cops & they will help u to get it back & if u cant proof it to them then there is no other way then to bid for it after all u can do this for ur mother.

Well, that's a hard one. The person that has it for sale might not even be the one who stole it. You cannot be 100% sure it's your mom's, and you really can't prove it, unless you have a picture that shows a lot of detail.

You should report this auction to Ebay and let them know you think it is a stolen bike. They will then pull the auction and no one can get it. Or since it is so close you to bid on it, hope you win and ask to pay them face to face when you pick up the bike. Then you could find out about it. Hope this helps.

There is a serial number imprinted on the bottom of the frame ... if you can prove that number is her's then you should call the police.

Furthermore. im sure its a criminal offence for ebay to be advertising stolen goods. Ignorance is not an excuse after all.

It's a very long way from you "knowing" it is hers and being able to prove it.

Look at it this way. The dude who stole the bike will be making 100% profit on his investment. Report it to E-Bay and the police.

wow. that's amazing. but being so long ago i don't think you have much chance. you could call the police and see what they have to say - just ask, it won't hurt. but, some things you gotta let slide, hey.

E-Bay has a policy against selling stolen goods (you need proof it was stolen)

i think that you would have to have the serial number, perhaps supplier/manufacturer could help. dont think e-bay would help as as many fake or stolen goods go through the e-bay auction which they profit from. as i read earlier the number is under the crank, perhaps mum has a record of it from the sale of the bike.
