Well, since you sound like you have such a lovely family, I decided to check out your story. You forgot to add that your son, Kyle Wayne Grider, is a check-forger, burglar, meth user, and statutory rapist. You also deserve a big thumbs up for your role, since you were apparently uncooperative with Police when they were searching for your son. I guess the a.sshole doesn't fall far from the tree. Whoops, I mean apple.

we had a case similar to this in upstate NY and the boy who ran from the police is now in jail for life

When you flee from the police you become responsible for anything that occurs during that pursuit. If your son had not fled the accident would not have happened. He's lucky the officers widow doesn't sue him. When your son gets out tell him to stop stealing motorcycles, and evading the police, and he won't have this problem again.

yes, and where is the issue, someone was killed in the commission of a criminal act. And the fact it was a police officer, he was lucky ( really) they made it 2nd degree, it would be much worst in our courts.

It is all about causation.

If your son wasn't running, the officer wouldn't have been chasing.

If the officer hadn't been chasing, the guy would have pulled out and driven on his way without causing an accident.

That's the rationale, anyways. I'm sorry for your and your son's misfortune.

Unfortunately your son began this whole event and caused the problems that ensued. It can be construed no other way. Had he not been on a stolen motorcycle and running from the police, the officer would not have been in that place at that time doing his duty... I feel sorry for you but I don't understand what you want from the people here on Yahoo Answers. Surly it's not to imply the law isn't being fair here?

I know who is going to be happy about this: all the people who had court dates with that officer in the near future. I'm sorry your son got hit with second degree murder -- it sounds like gross injustice to me.

Why do the cops even bother chasing sportbikes which top out at 180+ mph and can do 0-60 in less than 3 seconds? They are only putting themselves and innocent people at risk to hand out their frivolous tickets.

It all sounds a bit unfair to me. The definition of murder is that it was premeditated. This is just a shocking case of 3 people being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Condolences to the officer's family....he was only doing his job.

#edit# I'm not condoning theft, but theft of goods that should be insured anyway is NOT worth the loss of one life and the ruination of another.
