thanks for the answers. I don't plan on concealed carry, or anything, but I'd heard some crazy rumors that you had to have some insane $1000000 liability insurance policy to even own a gun there.

Illinois is one of two states (Wisconsin) that do not allow concealed carry permits.
Federal law governs the purchase of firearms, so those laws will be the same. |

Illinois has the most restrictive gun laws in the country. Given the Supreme Court ruling, that may change; but as of now even owning a handgun in the city of Chicago is illegal, at least the last time I read about it. |

Im a Missouri police officer and Illinois native.
Illinois is a Brady Law state. There is a 24 hour wait for the purchase of long guns and 3 day wait for handguns.
Purchase laws, including ammunition require more than the Federal Standard. You have to have a "FOID" card to purchase, possess or even go to a gun shop and look at a firearm or ammunition, much less buy.
Illinois doesn't register guns, they register people. You have to apply with the Illinois State Police (ISP) for a "Firearm Owner's ID Card", or "FOID". It's basically a driver's license looking card that says the ISP has checked your criminal background and you are ok to own firearms.
Transport laws are a little tough there too. During transport, a firearm has be rendered unuseable and locked in a container. The ammunition locked in a seperate container.
There is no CCW provision there AT ALL. |

I live in Illinois just outside Chicago. Other posters are correct about the requirements so i'll only reiterate those.
In order to own or possess a firearm in the state you need a FOID card. If you not prohibited from owning a firearm it's a form submitted with your picture and a small fee.
Transportation of a firearm is different. It must not be easily accessible (interpretive.) It must be unloaded and entirely enclosed in a case. You must also have your FOID card on your person. As an example if you have a FOID card your wife/girlfriend/neighbor whomever borrows your car and the gun is still in it. They could get charged with unlawful use of a weapon (felony). They would have to prove they had no idea the gun was inside the vehicle.
If you plan on bringing a firearm you own into the city of Chicago don't bother you can't. Current registration for firearms is closed and has been for years. Your only option purchase a firearm in Chicago already registered. In which you must re-register every year else it must be removed from city limits. If your moving to the suburbs be forewarned some suburbs including the city of Chicago have a ban on handguns and they cannot be brought into those areas. |
