Are there any laws or rules about use of NCIC, or can officers just use it for anything they want?

You have to be issued a pass code in order to use that system and the traffic on there is tracked. |

It's governed by two basic policies:
1) Right to know
2) Need to know
The right is my certification to use it. The need is anything related to law enforcement investigation. I can check license status and warrant status on people randomly but I can't run their criminal history the same way. I need a specific reason (usually an investigation) to pull the CH. Nor can I look up myself, spouse, friends, or relatives. |

LE use ONLY. We have to be NCIC certified and be able to explain why we ran a particular person. Justification is actually a key you have to fill in to run someone. |
