Naxalite Problem of India?

72 hours deadline given by the Home Minister to Naxalites is over and during this 72 hours, Naxalites have demonstrated their intentions. What should be the next line of action by the Govt. of India?

La Kho Kho,
You have not answered to the point. Praising India, India's democracy, advising me to have trust in the government were totally unwarranted. Telling me that my country's problem is none of my business is insulting. Would you tell the same thing to the relatives of the people who lost their lives in Naxalite violence. Their deaths is their relatives' business and we, the rest of the citizens should have nice sleep trusting our government?

Wow, Shy had really good points on the history and sources of the issue. Like he said, trying to solve this by diplomacy is the way for the future as generations-old mistrust cannot be swept off by a short-term, violent, authoritarian broom.

As an engineer, I would try to solve this issue in a pince-meal, bottom-up manner. Set up extremely well guarded pockets or regions that still show some support to Indian government with working and accountable governance, education, justice systems, sustainable development/ employment to show villages all around the possibilities of responsive Govt. Closely examine how the Naxalite movement survives and take baby steps and more to wean away support, resources and money. Try to establish minimum trust channels with the naxalite leaderships by using go-betweens and other methods - there will still be periodic bloodshed by dissenters, but we are hunkering down for the end-game. Divide and rule is something that we have always been a target of as a country, our government should use this tool too for better management. Militias like Salwa-Judum were created earlier, but these probably will need to be shelved for long term gains in trust - after all we have seen in many places what private militias turn out to be once an issue is under control!
The central budget should take this as a 20 year plan and allocate enough budgets for the same on a war footing.

Having said all this, all carrots should be associated with sticks to show the resolve or steel of a government. Innocent civilian casualties like should be responded to with resolute force. Army needs to be brought in - our internal tumour (somewhat like Pakistan's) has grown to a tipping point now. Maybe in the realm of the improbable, but legal provisions should be made to summarily execute hardcore leaders in captivity as one of the responses to civilian casualties.

Some of these recommendations assume ideal conditions - naxalites are thinking, intelligent, dangerous humans - so any resolution needs to have a formidable intelligence task force under the home-ministry.

Like Shy said, I believe only a HM with his eyes on the long-term, does not make short term, retaliatory statements further roiling already hot waters. Things are probably happening silently in the background (hopefully).

This spineless govt. is good for nothing .
Don't expect anything from them , Sir .
They cannot even hang the terrorists in possession like Afzal guru and Ajmal Kasab . What else can we expect from them .
We need Indian Revolution .

Dear Madhukar

I believe that the Government is going about ridding our country of the Naxalite menace in the right way.

Taking an analogy to the mosquito menace that's fast spreading everywhere, the solution does not lie in zapping the pest with a bat or a coil or just a fly swatter. The solution lies in identifying the reason for their breeding, identifying the places where they breed, clearing up the place and ensuring that there's no possibility of further propagation.

In a similar manner, the menace of Naxalism cannot be solved by violent encounters and hunting squads. The rise of Naxalism was and is due to the ruthless exploitation of the poor and the downtrodden by the rich and powerful. Untouchability, upper caste lower caste segregation, violent enforcement of Khap laws and many more such inhuman behavior of the haves towards the have-nots has seen the gradual growth of Naxalism and other forms of violent groups, that have come to believe that only violence begets solutions.

Our prime Minister and Home Minister are very wise and intelligent people who are trying their very best to bring the N's around to discuss the root causes and ameliorate the grievances.

BUT the N's having lost all faith in any sort of Governmental propriety due to their associating legal means and provisions as weapons used by the haves to once again usurp the rights of the exploited, are reluctant to relent and work towards a negotiated settlement of their grievances.

This is not a simple problem that can be solved in the short term. It is a very delicate step by step process and the first step needs to be to gain the confidence of the N's that the Government will do right by them.

Again I sincerely believethat the Government in general and our Home Minister in particular are walking the right path and talking the right language. Will the HM and the Government be allowed to work in a cautious manner, will they be given the time to work towards the eradication of the root causes of Naxalism, will they be able to gain the confidence of the naxalites in delivering their promises. Only time will tell

Sorry, I did not have time to put my thoughts in proper order. It is very difficult to accept violence, that too random and misdirected violence. Violence in any form should be abjured, but trying to overcome violence with violence can only be a short term solution and not the way to eradicate the menace. The right way is thru dialogue and removal and redressal of centuries old grievances.

It is really a matter of concerns that Govt is unable to nab the devils and they are becoming notorious day by day to prove their strengths by way of damaging and destruction's.They are playing with the lives of the innocent people.
Are we trying to give the liberties up to that extent that it should not prove to be taliban like activities and becomes pain in the neck.
Nip the evil in the bud thru militant activities for the benefit of all citizens of India and ensure safe and secure lives.

any action not in conformity with the constitution should be viewed seriously. India has always been slow in reacting.

The home minister is the key person in the whole issue. If he decides, it can be done. The misfortune is that some people are with naxakites and do not cooperate with police or government. This is one measure problem in India. People have, a fistful though, more faith in Naxalites, smuggler and bhai log.
I guess naxalite will react very negatively. There will be more blood shade, more railway tracks will be blown up, Some innocent people will fall pray to this and so on. I am afraid, they will join hand with extremists as well. But I am sure that a day will dawn, when the manace will be over for good. And this will happen in 2010.

Hello Madhukar. Don't think more because Naxalite problem is none of our business. Our Union Home Minister is a highly experienced and reputed Minister and he knows what next action to take.
India is a democratic country (though quality of democracy is not as refined as in the USA, Europe, etc) but India has definitely established its name in the world. Not only this, like China, India is a global pleasure and most part of the world is satisfied with India and what India says. India of today is a dependable and trustable country and therefore, before taking any next step in connection with Naxalie problem, India will think twice and thrice and even more. Today lots of investment is coming tto India because these investing countries have confidence in India. I have confidence that India will not like to take any such action which can jeopardise its name and the confidence which have been gained by different countries. What next step or action our Home Minister is going to take, frankly, this is none of our business. Please trust your Government who has been selected by good numbers of votes given by us because we trust the Government. I have confidence that the Naxalite problem would be solved in an amicable way sooner or later in order not to lose confidence of the world which India has gained in the international market as a largest democratic country in the world. Being democratic country, its not only Afzal Guru and Ajmal Kasab.s hanging matters are going slow, it was the same slow process with those assasins, who killed our beloved Prime Minister Indra Gandhi and who were hanged after around 15 years. Quality of our country's democracy has been improving day by day and I have confidence that Naxalites will also get the deserved justice one day and its a matter of time only because it is said that times takes care of everything. Long Live India's Democracy.
