Neighbor's kid is a thief/burglar? what actions can i take?
|
So i've been living in my apt for 5 years and it has been pretty peaceful and safe until my next door neighbor moved away. The new neighbors have this 15-16 year old kid who doesn't listen to his parents at all and bring shady black people to our front door area to "dance". There has been 3-4 incidents where the parents call the cops to come talk to him. Apparently it's ineffective.
After a month they moved in, we got burglarized. A week later, my downstairs neighbor got burglarized.
I have no proof my new neighbor's kid did it, but like I said before this neighborhood was safe for 5 years until they moved in.
A few days ago, that neighbor's kid came knocking on our door twice, and lingered around our front door when we didn't answer for 10 mins. My dad finally opened the door and we thought he was gone....but the kid was still lingering around the hallway; when my dad asked him what he wanted, he asked for some lemons?! who the hell go around asking people for lemons?
our door was the only door he knocked, so we think his real purpose that day was to find out if anyone was home and break in if no one was.
i feel like i may be jumping to conclusions, but i want my family to be safe and have our belongings be safe, so what actions can i take to feel more secure?
(don't tell me to move away, b/c we can not afford to move. plus the place is good except for this one lingering fear of burglar neighbors...why move and let them win?)
Thanks for the help! Additional Details any suggestions on where to get good and cheap cameras?

He was definitely looking to break in, this has happened to me before. Next time he knocks on the door, DO NOT ANSWER, he will think no one is home and try to go in (they came through my balcony when I did this). Then he will be on your property - I'd suggest using a golf club like I did. He'll get arrested, go to the hospital and learn a valuable lesson all in one quick swoop. |

You can get a good camera at any store. What the hell? You need to be an adult and talk to the parents or owner of the house and call the police if they threaten or harm you in anyway. I don't understand the need to mention 15 year old. I am assuming who is white about his friends being black. What's the point? Not all black people are bad or live in the hood. I am offended by your remark. @~ |

Put up web cams in the hallway that are focused on your door and in locations where they won't be easily seen.
I guarantee that if the neighbor kid is involved, you will find out quickly. |

This is a perfect example of why you need to know your neighbors. If you all band together to watch out for each other, it is the best way to discourage illegal activity. If you see unknown persons loitering around or people where they shouldn't be, you should call the police and get the suspicious people identified and put on notice people are watching. This can be combined with coordination with the local police agency for a Block Watch program.
Nothing discourages criminal activity better than the criminals thinking people are watching and reporting. This is the time to be nosy neighbors.
The suggestion to get a surveillance system is great for finding out who is victimizing you. An alarm, a loud obnoxious audible alarm, is a good way to deter criminals from entering if it is set to go off as soon as a door or window is opened. You can get remote controls to activate/deactivate before you go in.
If you do become the victim of a break-in, your only chance of recovering your property is in having good documentation of what you had. This can be good photos, make and model of items, lists of serial numbers (must have), values of items, and descriptions of anything specific about your items.
Also, the best way to help the police find the criminals is to make sure that all of your windows, window sills, window frames, doors, door frames, and anything else a burglar would touch breaking in, is clean and free of your fingerprints. Depending on where you are, the police may or may not attempt to find fingerprints. If they don't then you should ask why they don't. They should.
At this point in time it is almost impossible to not be victimized. It is advisable to have insurance to protect you from losses due to theft. |
