No, you're quite right. They've had ten years in power to sort this out and they consistently talk the talk about building new prisons and getting tough on crime, but Labour just cannot walk the walk. Their response is constantly 'it is under review' and that really isn't good enough. Gordon Brown currently has something like 60 major policy reviews taking place. Why the hell can't he make a decision? This is too important for dithering.
In saying that Aries, try being a pensioner not paying your council tax. They'll soon find the space for you then. It's all wrong.
EDIT - NO MONEY??? The Government managed to pay out £137 billion last year to unelected, unaccountable quangoes FFS. They have found billions of pounds to wage war in the Middle East after they lied to Parliament. They found £10 billion and rising for a two week jolly in 2012. And they managed to find £110 billion for Northern Rock. How can people on here say there's no money. If it was wasn't for the above (and other waste which is too numerous to recount here), this country would be swimming in money. It isn't how much you spend, it's how you spend it and Labour have shown themselves to be completely incompetent with public funds (again). |

There has been six murder sentences proven beyond a shawdow of doubt. hang them that would release more cells.
Just remember it costs the UK tax payers £30.000 a year for each prisoner, wake up to the reality hang them, save on prisons, staff and police time as well as supposed rehabilitation. |

Because prisoners get too much spent on them. A prisoners meal allowance is 3 times the amount of a person in hospital.
With TV, pool tables, playstations, party nights etc its no wonder they are full. If prison was a horrendous experience I would imagine you would not want to get back. Other prisons around the world are not holiday camps so why are they here? Human Rights Act - Human rights for criminals not for their victims that is why!!
The death penalty should be brought back for murderers that have been proven for certain (forensically) or people who have a life sentence - not eligible for early release should have the choice to serve the sentence or die (lethal injection) |

In the short term house the less violent criminals in soft prisons( army camps, or empty ships) and place the murderers, yobs, and other violent criminals in the ordinary prisons but ensure that they receive basic necessities only, food and drink and plenty of hard work. Let them rot rogether and hopefully they will reduce their population through natural means. |

why spend yet more money on criminal parasitic vermin? no more space in the jails. exterminate the present crop of useless scum currently taking up said prison space. perhaps hang every 3rd inmate. that'd sort overcrowding AND make future jailbait think twice before commiting a crime in the 1st place. |

In Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio puts those wonderful citizens in
pup tents behind the prison fence. Then he makes them wear
pink underwear, he wants them to be noticed as outstanding
criminal citizens of the fine state. Most states can do this or something similar until they have the funds to build something
concrete. Does that answer your question? |

Building new prisons sounds like a great idea, but nobody wants to pay more taxes for it. All we can do is bring in new criminals and let some old ones out early. Maybe if enough people are let go early and crime rates start to go up, taxpayers will be willing to pay for new prisons... |

Maybe if the US spent more time and money on reformation programs instead of having people sit in jail and do nothing all day then the crime rates would go down and the society would be better. I think putting people in jail doesnt necessarily change them and they end up going back but if worked on the roots of the problem then maybe there wouldnt be so many criminals. |

The penal system is a booming industry.
In the last ten years the industry has boomed out of control and you'll see another boom in the next few years. You see this is an industry where money is to be made like any other. The Prison Industrial Complex has lobbyists like the Tobbacco, Oil, Military, and other industries that work really hard and spend tons of money to pass legislation to get more money.
If you research the topic a little you will find more growth in recent years than ever before. They pass laws which jail more people, then get more funding to build more prisons, then pass more laws.
For example recent legislation has bumped up the "Three Strikes" rule to harsher levels. By criminalizing more people you in turn create more crime. Numerous studies have shown that the current system of "Rehabilitation" through punishment is increases rather than decreases crime.
The capitalist economy puts the value of money higher than that of people so it is clear what the result is. Only 15 percent of the population (or less) is in the Professional class, the rest... are ruled by them- valued only in commodified form.
More actual rehabilitation funding and less for prisons is the real "humane" solution as so many people know but money is to be made now, waiting is for socialists. |

If the U.S. would spend more money on education, less money on senseless testing, more time understanding children and their personal and individual needs, less time selling dreams in shopping malls, we would have fewer people in prison.
We kick people right out of a very lousy school system into a very elaborate and expensive prison system.
Until the U.S. appreciates the work of the laboring class and quit making children who are not academically inclined to feel inadequate and stupid, we will have prisons booked to capacity. Not everyone is good in reading, writing and math but are brilliant and gifted in mechanics, painting, arts, and people skills.
Americans must quit treating people as if they are nothing because they can't read, write, spell, speak or calculate quadratic equations or we will be locking up people who would have made excellent and happy custodians and auto mechanics if their needs had been realized.
WAKE UP PRESIDENT BUSH! A child isn't "left behind" just because he doesn't go to college!!! No Child left behind is making only two successful tracks for children...prison or PRINCETON...college or jail. STOP CRIMINALIZING OUR CHILDREN!!! |

Instead of building more jails, why dont we build more schools? And secondly, how come the Bible is not allowed in school, but you can get it in prison? |
