Only like the police when you need them?

Why do people only like the police when they need us? When people go to the polls or dont and the city and states budgets get cut time after time people are so happy cause they have lower taxes. Then when people need one of those orginizations that were affected by the cuts, ex. police. Then all of a sudden its a problem cause the police didnt respond to "their" crisis fast enough. Why is there this double edged sword? Don't allow a decent budget for the police, then when their swamped with the political b/s, i.e. every god for saken piece of paper work going along with every case or minor ticket or response time being long due to the volume of calls and lack of people to take those calls.

Not everyone feels that way. I've always felt that police have a deep sense of honor - how else could they perform such a thankless and dangerous job? I respect you and am glad that you are willing to put up with all of the political BS to try to make my world safer.
There was only one time I've been pulled over unfairly, and it was obvious that the cop was having a bad day. You're entitled to those, too.
People just don't like getting caught being stupid.
But I'm not alone - there are many people like me who really appreciate what you do. And the sacrifices your families make so that you can sacrifice for us.
I think we may just not be vocal enough. Shame on us. |

I think it is because people only meet cops when there is a problem. Personally, I don't have that problem. My brother is a cop, my ex is a cop, so I don't have that pre-judgment. Cops are normal people to me. |

Well, to be honest, I have never met a genuinely nice cop. The only police I ever see are arrogant and they think they are god. And as a matter of fact when you see on tv how an officer pulls someone over in a hospital for speeding because shes trying to get to her dying father and he throws her over the car and cuffs her because he doesnt believe her well that doesnt say very much of how nice cops are
oh yes and let me add that a few years ago a cop came to our apt (falsely) and when my husband wanted to see what the problem was the cop told him that he better just go sit back down... this was in our own house, we were doing nothing, he just stood up, and we are law abiding citizens - and he thinks he has the right to talk to us like that unjustifiably |

My father has been in law enforcement for 22 yrs. I was raised to have respect for authorities. No one likes the police when they are involved in doing something illegal. I also think that things in the press give off a bad impression. There are "bad" police officers. And just like with any group of people there are those that do things to give the rest a bad name. My dad is realistic about it. He says there are those that are there because they are "power happy" , but then there are the other ones that genuinely want to do their job and make a difference and help people. Not everyone feels that way. People just believe in stereo types. It is sad but true. It is not just the police this happens to. You rarely see something on tv about something positive a police officer does, you only see the bad ones abusing their power. That is where alot of it comes from. |

If the police force wanted to make their budget stretch they should set up just like a fire station. Sit around a station waiting to respond to calls. It would cost far less that way. Less cops on duty, less vehicles, less gas, weapons, etc. Plus more police could respond to each call, because no cops would be busy clocking speeders. Would the fire department be more effective if they drove around all day? Yes. Would it be worth the cost? No Police are no different.
How much money do you think your worth per year? All you had to do to get the job was not get arrested. It's not like it's hard to find a qualified cop. Just because most people aren't willing to harass people all day doesn't mean they are unable to. If they paid as much as you think your worth the job competition would rise like crazy. You'd be competing with most the people that are applying for the military, instead of just washed up high school athletes.
You probably have a bunch of friends that are cops. Which is fine. I have a bunch of friends that are salesmen. Most people hate salesmen. For all the right reasons. Rude, abrupt, assertive, overbearing people as a whole. Well, cops are the same way, except cops are also violent, and power hungry. Normal people can't stand power trippers. Which is why most people hate cops. Rightfully so. Why don't you go clerk a gas station or be a server? Do something helpful. |

I have a disdain for police in general because they are often rude and talk down to adults like they are children. Now don't get me wrong I'm sure there are many stupid people that need that kind of treatment but most don't. I respect the police and the great need that they serve in a peaceful society, but it would be nice if they trained them to at least give people respect even if they don't look, dress, or talk like them. In other words give respect until their is an obvious reason not to. |

Cops deal with the scum of the earth - so it is just natural that some of that whipes off on a lot of them. I understand that, but i dont have to like it. |

Basically it's like the old saying "A few bad apples spoil the bunch" There are some really nasty arrogant police officers out there in every city/town and folks tend to view them as the regular cop on the beat though most are just trying to do their jobs and defend life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I do agree with Whitney though, I'm not a big fan of the police because most of the ones I've come in contact with are arrogant. I do understand they have pressures so I'm not a cop hater. I just dislike it when the "average joe" citizen does something that a police officer does as well the police officer doesn't get a ticket or fined or anything of that nature. We had a case where a police officer caused a wreck that killed a couple who had been married for 56 years. The wreck was so bad that the couples pickup trucks back tailgate was knocked off and thrown thru a store window on the opposite side of the street. The woman was thrown about 15 feet from the truck. This officer who had been driving 65+ in a 35 zone (all they could do is lower end approximate how fast he was driving) was responding to a minor disturbance call illegally (he was supposed to have his lights on at least according to the law) as only a backup (as in : what's the rush there were other police officers already on the scene) when he plowed into the couple. He wasn't charged with murder or even close (only manslaughter and found innocent of that) while another case involved a high speed pursuit chase that resulted in the death of an off duty officer going home from the local gym and this guy (a civillian) faces life in prison (they're even talking death penalty) for murder charges (he hit the cop head on). What's fair about that? Cops need to be held just as accountable as us working stiffs. |

I believe most people didn't understand what your point was.
It sounds as if you involved in a governmental, and union problem. Face it, where ever you're located, the Police are not the priority on the budget. You have my sympathy. |

In general people don't like to be told what to do. It's simple as that. Seeing a police officer represents an authority figure who has the power to put you in a cage. Regardless of criminal status, that doesn't sit well with most people, so even those who don't hate cops often avoid them.
I was neutral until a friend of mine befriended several cops. I got to see them in their free time and I found out that they were all cheating on their spouses and most of them were smoking pot. Those same people wouldn't think twice for arresting a civilan caught with drugs. I realize it's unfair to catagorize all cops based on those few, but it certainly hasn't brightened my opinion either. |
