I babysit a baby in my home twice a week. In the past the father has always been the one to drop off and pick up the child. This weekend the father pushed the mother down while she was holding the baby. The baby and mom went to the ER. The baby is okay, he just has a bump on his head. The mother is staying home with him for a few days.
The father has been kicked out of the house, she filled for an emergency order of protection on him, she is filling for sole custody of the child, she has changed her locked, she has information on battered womens shelters in the areas...
Now, she plans to still use me as the babysitter since I know her son well and he likes me. I want the baby to have familiar people in his life, hes been through a lot. What do I do if the father shows up at my place? Obviously I won't let him in, but what if he tries to break in? What if he calls the cops for me denying him access to his child?
The mom is going to fill out a form like daycares use saying she is the only one allowed to pick him up and that the father and grandparents are not for any reason allowed to... but I'm just a babysitter... is that form all I need in case he shows up demanding his child? Do I call the police if he shows up and not even answer the door? What if he tries to break in? Do I grab the baby and my daughter and run?
I honestly think I shouldn't be the babysitter anymore... if this man is violent enough to send his own kid to the ER who knows what he is capable of. But I don't want to abandon the child and his mother in their time of need.
What would you do? Is calling the non-emergency line proper? Do I tell them he is tresspassing?

If he shows up, call the police. If there is an order of protection, it also covers the child, so he is not allowed to see the child either. The police will be able to check on the order of protection. Just call the police and let them handle it. |

ask the mother of child to make your home a prohibited place for him too. she can do it by mentioning in her petition to the court. |

Don't mess around with the non-emergency line, call the emergency line and tell them you are frightened because a violent man is at your door.
It's a hell of a situation for the mother to put you in, but maybe she has no choice if she really needs to go out. |

Keep your door locked while you have the boy ... locking it 24/7 would be better! You will not have time to lock the door when "Mr. Wonderful" comes to it.
Use the emergency line to call the police, that's what it is there for! The call center will get all of the necessary information to get the right help to you fast!
It's great that you are still interested in helping the mother out during this mess, she will need some friends she can count on to get through it.
If he called the police complaining that you won't let him see his son, he would be announcing to them that he is attempting to violate the order of protection. If he is smart, he won't do that! |

The mother needs to explain the situation to you..if there is a restraining order against him and he cannot come to the house, then you would have to call the police.
You need to address all of this to the mother since she is the one with the restraining order in place. |

The mother should go to a women's shelter. Tell her you will only babysit after she goes to one, and see about setting up babysitting over there. |
