There are several ways.
If you have been with the department for any length of time, you know where everything is. When you consider the amount of miles you put on while patrolling, it does not take long before you remember all the roads.
If you don't know, many cars have a GPS system. In addition, the computer our dispatch uses automatically calls up the cross streets. This information is displayed on the computer in our cars. If you don't know the street, you almost always know the cross street. |

When we send officers to a call they usually know the area well enough to know exactly to go. If they do not then we can pull up directions on our computer and direct them over the radio. All officers have computers in their computers so they too can pull up the information. |

In the old days we used memory, had to memorize all streets and byways in assigned areas.
Today my daughters patrol car, is equipped with a GPS and navigational mapping system, showing quickest route to get there,but you still have to know where you are. |

When I was paramedic firefighter for about ten years we use to hold street class for newer people on the department for our district after a year or so it was like one had the street map implanted in your head. |

Key map location is given every time you get a call or a cross street is given if not both!!!!! When I first road my district and beat alone, I drove down every street in the district and beat, found out which ones had dead ends, cut off and picked up 5 miles away!!! I just made it a point to drive my entire district and beat every night!!!!! |

All police should be familiar with the area in which they work. when they are unsure they either can ask dispatch for a landmark, a cross street or anything the caller who is reporting the problem can provide such as the yellow house with the old ford truck in the driveway, the sixth house past the railroad tracks ect. New police computers have GPS units in them and when a call comes in the computer tells them where to go. |
