Penalties Police face for excessive force?

I am writing a paper about the penalties police incur for miss-use coercive force/misconduct/excessive force and what is being done to stop it. But I am having trouble finding information on what penalties the police face such as reprimands or such. It would be very helpful if you could point me in the direction of some good sources for more info.
thanks

are there any classes they might have to take? such as when you get a speeding ticket and you can take a defensive driving class. do they have any programs like that? also does internal affairs play any part?

From personnel experience, go to www.doc.alabama.gov/adminregs.asp
then go to AR 208 Standards of conduct
Also look at Administrative Investigations for some more insight. Had to live by all these ARs for 20 years, and everyone says OH THAT'S AN EASY JOB hahahah.

wat ive found is that the officer is put on administrative leave while a panel of three decide if it was excessive force and if so wat the penalty should be.

Mr. Goodhi
No "penalties".

A desk job for a few days & then back out on to the street.

In most large cities a complaint of excessive force goes to a civilian municipality investigating unit. The investigate and make a notification to the chief or top cop. Usually in the form of suspension. No pay and loss of police powers during the suspension. If more than one month is recommended the top cop can recommend the officer gets fired.
The officer is allowed to appeal any discipline given after the discipline is meted out. Usually to another civilian police board who officially runs the police department inmost large cities and then through the court system.
If the investigating agency finds anything criminal about the compliant all the information is turned over to the county prosecutors office who decides, like they do on all cases civilian or police, if they are going to prosecute. If they prosecute the officer usually because of his position gets a worse sentence then a civilian would for the same crime, if convicted.
Misuse and coercive conduct are different. What some people believe is coercive is not considered so by the courts. Some consider any questioning go to be coercive, some thing a good cop bad cop routine is coercive. In court motions are made by the defenses to throw out any evidence found by possible coercive methods. A judge listens to testimony and decides. If he says it was found by illegal coercion it gets thrown out. This is the method used in the US to discourage any illegal acts by the police.
