Perks of becoming a Police Officer?

Hi, i'm 17 and i'm looking to go into a career with the Toronto Police force. I know with other jobs there are certain perks you get, good pension plans, stuff like that. Is there anything like this for police officers in Ontario or maybe just in general? I hear Police officers don't have to pay taxes on the money they make is this true?

Generally, you get good pay. The agency I want to work for starts you out at just over $40,000 a year.

No two days on the job will ever be the same.

Depending on where you work, you can pretty much decide how busy you will be during the day on patrol.

GREAT benefits like health insurance, dental, pension and so forth.

Respect.

Those are just a few off the top of my head.

People will call you "Sir", even if they're three times your age.

In the US, cops pay taxes too. Generally, good pensions and retirements depend on your personal saving habits and years of service. Most US police departments give out great benefits after 25 years or more of service.

Nothing wrong with perks as they're part of the compensation package. (Actually, 'perks' is shortened slang for 'prerequisites', or conditions of employment just like salary.) Nice thing about working for the government is that you're not subject to profit and loss in such a volatile way as businesses are.

But salary and fringe benefits can be vastly different, even in adjacent suburbs. And police officers are subject to more stringent standards of conduct, even on their own time, than most other professions. Even doing something as innocent as overspending on your credit cards can make you appear more susceptible to bribery and corruption, even if your integrity is high.

I don't know how Canadian tax law works, but in the U.S. even military people have to pay income tax, which seems kind of odd since it's taxes that pay them in the first place. Same with police; they have to pay their taxes.

PERK: You get to wear a uniform and people will admire you.

CURSE: You get to wear a uniform and a good many people will hate you simply because you do.

PERK: You get to enforce the law and occasionally give someone a break.

CURSE: Commit the smallest infraction and people will want you fired, jailed, and publicly flogged.

PERK: Decent pay, decent retirement and health benefits.

CURSE: People think you are over paid and leech feeding at the public expense.

PERK: You will know things about your fellow man.

CURSE: You will know things about your fellow man that you wish you didn't.

PERK: You get to carry a gun

CURSE: You get to carry a gun and might have to use it.

PERK: You wil learn just what kind of man you are.

2 Thing they'll never tell you in police training...
1. ) You'll learn things about your neighbors you'd really rather not know.
2.) People will call you at all hours to ask dumb legal questions
(my uncle just got a speeding ticket....Would you have....)

Cops pay taxes like evryone else.

Police also have the best pension plans as the duty is the most difficult.

Join the military, get some life experience and apply when your about 24-25.

You are a public servant dedicated to helping people. If you are in it for the perks do the citizens of Toronto a favor.

Don't join.
