Any police car used for transport must be either plastic, vinyl, or plastic covered. This is so that any bodily fluids spilled on the seat can be cleaned away and disinfected. They are starting to use molded seats more because it's more comfortable when you are in handcuffs plus if there is an accident on the way to the station it will cause less damage to the detainee. With normal seats it puts a lot of pressure on the persons back and if they get hit or have to suddenly stop it could cause back injuries. |

Because they get puked on, urinated on, spit on, bled on, crapped on and all manner of unsavory things. Oh and don't forget the just plain nasty or otherwise bug infested people that are often arrested. Would you want any of those things hanging out in your unit? |

The three P's;Poop,Puke and Pee.The other reason is to stop the suspect from stuffing things under the seat.In patrol cars w/out the molded seats the suspect can put things under the seat. |

I don't think that they take comfort into consideration when making a cop car.
Molded plastic seats are probably there so the perp can not tear appart the seats, hide things inside to avoid finding evidence, and in the cases of some, clean up really well. They don't hold scents, if you will. And they are cheaper, I am sure. |

Way too often drunks are frequent fliers in the back of police cars and way too often they puke back there. The soft seats and carpet were done away with several years ago to make it easier to clean up after nasty azzholes who decide the best course of action during their arrest is to puke, shizit, and piss in the back seat of police cars. So sit back, hope you don't have 'roids, and enjoy the ride!!! |

alot of the people throw up in the car, or even use the bathroom in the car. Also homeless have all sort of waste on them as they go into the car.
They can hose the back of that type of call out. ( they have a drain in the floor normally)
It can also be disinfected. |

To make it harder for the people in the back seat to hide their dope or weapons...it also comes in handy when time to clean.
And if you put wax on the seats, a "screen test" is more effective on plastic. |

They're molded in such a way where your cuffed hands will fit in the molded areas of the chair. The holes are there so you don't have to site on your hands. And I assume they are plastic to prevent damage [bodily fluids, kicking, etc.] from criminals who are arrested, cuffed, and stuffed.
I can only assume they don't want to be in there, and the seats might be some very subtle intimidation, too. |

The hard plastic seats are non absorbent. You can clean bio hazards from them. They are also bolted in so the criminals cannot dump drugs and weapons before they are taken to jail. They are molded to help restrain the criminal. |

I don't think I've ever been close enough to a cop car to notice. I've been pulled over for tickets, and I see them driving on the street. Even when they've come to the elementary schools in the past, I was too busy counting heads (to make sure no students went missing) to pay any attention to the police car. The molded plastic does make sense, though. |

I think they're molded so you can sit in them when you are cuffed. |

Why molded is a function of the Plastic. It is the most economical, stucturally sound and durable method of creating plastic objects of that size. Since most residents of the back seat are not there for a long time confort in not an issue. Plastic is easy to keep clean, not easily damaged and can be molded to acceppt a pair of cuffed hands at the waist line. This reduces the whining and crying about the pain of being cuffed. |

They are easier to clean or disinfect and molded so you won't have to sit on the handcuffs. |

Molded so that a person with handcuffs can sit comfortably.
Plastic so it's easy to clean if a suspect throws up or pees or poops or otherwise soils it. |
