In Tennessee, to get into the Police Academy provided by the State, you have to be hired by a police department, who'll have you sent to the Academy and they'll pay the costs of your training.
There's also a Private certified Academy that doesn't have that requirement, but you have to pay the costs of the Academy, which runs a few thousand dollars. Then after the Academy, you can try to get hired on by a department. This can come in handy if you're wanting to join a department that won't pay to send you to the Academy.
Some Junior Colleges that offer Criminal Justice also have an on site Police Academy that you can participate in while obtaining your Associates Degree.
Training generally lasts around 12-16 weeks. For the Highway Patrol, it lasts around 30 weeks.
For the actual training part, you're taught the laws, tactics, self-defense, driving, firearms, PT, etc.
If you're looking to join the State police, expect a Military style training. It's literally modeled after the military boot camp. This is also why they are very professional, strict in their dress code, procedures, etc. |
