I can call a canine unit to the scene. If they smell something I now have probable cause to search the vehicle. Also if I see anything in plain view, or if I smell an odor of drugs I have probable cause. There is also the search incident to arrest. If you are arrested, I can search the car.

If an officer wants to find out if you have anything in your car, he is going to find out. And I don't mean by doing anything illegally or violating your rights. If you just give verbal permission, and let him search, you will probably be done fairly quick. If you want to object and make it pain, it can become a long process.

If you're stoppedd by the police he'll be able to remove you from the car and do a cursory (quick non-intrustive) search of the care. If it he probable cause that you are in the comission of a crime, he's able to search your car. If you consent to the search he'd be able to search it as well.

A police officer cannot arrest you for invoking your 4th amendment rights. He may try to search you anyway, he may press to get you to consent.

The best way to assure that you're not going to get into trouble is to not have anything illegal in your car. You never know how an individual cop is going to react to you. He could be a bad cop, or you could be suspicious. If you're pulled over the best thing to do is to cooperate and be polite. You don't have to consent to a search, and I wouldn't if I were you. I have had police ask me if they could search my trunk and I've told them no.

While this isn't an answer as much as an extension or confirmation, I really think you should keep Damien T's answer in mind.

You have the right to not be searched, but anything that is in plain view is completely all right. That's why when you get pulled over, the cop will look through the windows. Anything bad they can see in plain view will be able to get them in your car though. If you have a body in a box in your car, you're completely fine. A police offer can't go through your things for a routine traffic stop. But if they find a finger, they have every right to search the rest of the car to see who it belongs to.

While this is an extreme, I just wanted to make a point. When you refuse an officer the right to search your car, house, or anywhere when they ask your permission, there's nothing they can do but try again later. But if they walk up, and you have anything somewhere where they can see it without poking around, there's nothing you can do.

But to answer your main questions,

1. Expect him to act like himself after you deny him entry. He might ask why, try to get you to admit you have something suspicious, or just move on with life. Sometimes it's all just routine.

2. He won't "Make up a reason." He may try to find one, if you seem suspicious enough.

3. Expect him to continue on with whatever you got pulled over for.

He will call his superiors and get a search warrant from a judge and then you will have no choice.

He may call for a dog to go around the car and if the dog picks up nothing you will probably go on your way.If you were smoking weed/drinking in the car and he smells it that is enough for him to search it.
